A cast copper-alloy mount from a post-medieval candle snuffer, more accurately a wick trimmer. The mount is a long, narrow rectangle in plan with a trefoil shaped terminal at the short ends. Fourteen iron nails or parts of nails, all very heavily corroded and collectively weighing 172.29g.
The three longest are c.58mm in length with oval or circular heads, c.17mm wide max. Of the remainder at least four others are broken along the shank, and those that retain heads are similarly oval or circular and of similar size. Seven rim sherds, four base sherds and twenty three body sherds of Roman sand-tempered greyware, all from the same vessel. Lorraine Mepham (Wessex Archaeology) suggests a middle-late 2nd century date and points out that some of the sherds are burnt. This may however just be the result of being placed on the edge of the bonfire.
One of the body sherds retains a shadow of circular copper alloy residue, 21-22mm in diameter, which at the time of finding had a copper alloy nummus of Constantius II adhering to the inside surface (see record WILT-200EF8).
The largest sherd (body with coin …

Five rim sherds, two base sherds and thirteen body sherds of Roman grog-tempered greyware, probably all from the same vessel. Lorraine Mepham (Wessex Archaeology) suggests a middle-late 2nd century date and that the bloaty appearance of the fabric is due to burning.
The largest sherd (rim) measures 70.53x56.78x9.23mm, the smallest (rim edge) 21.51x13.37x5.55mm and all the sherds together weigh 133.52g.
The sherds were found in a pit with fourteen iron nails (WILT-E2A7F2), more Roman pottery (WILT-E232C8), Roman coins (WILT-200EF8, WILT-203724 and fragment WILT-2057C7 which is poss…

A probable gilded sheet copper alloy harness fitting of medieval date. The flat circular fitting measures 25.6mm by 20.7mm by 1.2mm and weighs 1.5g. On one side is a rounded projection with a slightly off-centre pierced hole, 3.6mm in diameter. The edge opposite the loop is ragged, possibly reflecting an old break and there may have been another loop or perhaps a hook in this position. The front of the pendant is decorated with incised hatched lines and small punched annulets which alternate in the resulting lozenges. There is a trace of gilding on the front. The fitting may have func…
