Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published
Middle or late Anglo-Saxon ansate brooch, cast from copper alloy. The bow is pronounced, almost triangular in profile. The terminals are wide and flat, triangular in shape with a small end projection. There are moulded grooves along the length of the terminals and end projections. The hinge and catch-plate are complete on the reverse of the brooch, and the hinge has a trace of iron, although the pin is now missing.
The shape and decoration classes this brooch as a Hubener's Gruppe 9 brooch, or a Weetch type XII.Ai (Domburg type), and it is similar to Hattat 1328.
