Copper alloy and iron possible scissors fragment. A small leaf-shaped iron blade fragment [tip lost] with a backing of thin copper alloy which appears to extend from the broken stub of a handle with an angled outer end and a low rib on one side; the loss of a counterpart is presumed. County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy and textile strap end. A pair of plates or a single plate folded lengthways with an ogival outer end and a rivet hole of diameter 1.6mm at its inner end, which was probably engrailed. A further rivet at the front end was only noted during image processing. Woven fabric, now of a buff tint, remains trapped between the plates. This might point to a later medieval date within the available range as sumptuary laws enacted following the Black Death, particularly the Statute of 1369, restricted the wearing of leather straps by the lesser sort. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1400…

Object type: CHAPE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A fragment of an iron probable late medieval to early post-medieval scabbard chape. Only the lower end of the object survives. This is a cast, hollow flat triangular chape with a jagged break around its upper edge and a flattened globular terminal projecting from its lower end. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.
Scabbard chapes are more commonly made from sheet metal, but cast examples in copper alloy and iron are known. Compare PAS records: PUBLIC-03A532, LON-0444D0 and WMID-C808A3. It seems likely to be of late medieval to early post-medieval date.

An incomplete copper-alloy medieval vessel lug. A hole runs right through along the long axis from the back of the head to the open mouth, and this would have held the end of a rectilinear handle. An example from a shallow sheet-metal bowl (not a chafing dish) is published in Egan 1998, fig. 143. The surface of the metal is slightly corroded and the break…
