Description: The object is circular in plan and rectangular in cross-section. It is constructed from a sheet metal disc with upturned edges and cell walls creating a cross design. The cross has a quatrefoil at its centre, inlaid with blue enamel, and four larger lobes between these, inlaid with white enamel. The surrounding field is inlaid with blue enamel. Most of the enamel remains in place, but damage to the edge of the object has removed some of this. The reverse is plan, with no evidence of attachment. The metal is light green with red-brown patching.
Measurements: diameter: 14.5mm; thickness: 2.4mm; weight: 1.33g
Discussion: The size of this object and lack of attachments makes its identification difficult. It has close parallels with brooches of Weetch's type 20 such as DOR-DA741C, however its small size suggest it is more likely to be the bezel from a finger ring, similar to SWYOR-AF5909. 4747100011004ESS2024-03-14T15:59:43Z2024-03-15T10:37:07Z1.33PAS65F31EEF001C4A14.52.41712122141425196872011220033EssexUttlesfordSewards EndTL573952.027196860.28699982bands.shops.handy10ESS-31F2F3Copper alloy10627CastInlaid with enamelIncompleteGoodEARLY MEDIEVALx41022EARLY MEDIEVALx41022x41022Metal detectorReturned to finderESS-31EEFC_65f3239a389b7.jpg1268015images/lrogerson/EasternProbably22024-03-15T10:37:07.778Zfinds-11555781155578NMS-31DF35COINMEDIEVALA Medieval silver penny of Edward III (AD 1327-1377), third 'florin' coinage, type 4 dating to AD 1344-1351 (N 1116). The stem is rectangular in cross section and solid to the tip. The bit is a flattened rectangular shape with a small cleft cut into either side and is incomplete at the end of the stem. The bow is a flattened loop shape.
Casket keys have a long chronology possibly starting as early as the early medieval period (see an example from Brandon, Riddler in Tester et al 2014, 183, no. 8331) and continuing until at least as late as the 15th century (from York, Ottaway and Rogers 2002, no. 14290; and Winchester, Biddle 1990 no. 3851).

The object is composed of a circular ring, with two drilled holes, which would have once housed a loop (now missing). A central recessed groove runs circumferentially around the exterior of the ring, this has been perforated in two places with long slots. The sliding section (now missing) would have sat within this groove and moved around the slot - this element would have been pierced with a single hole which could have been aligned on the calibrated markings allowing the sun to project through the hole and tell the time to an accuracy of around 10 minutes. The slot is flanked on the outer side by transverse incised gradation lines running from the slit to an incised line and the initials of the months of the year, in groups of six arranged to either side: 'I F M A M I' to one side (for the first months of the year) and 'I A S O N D' (for the later months of the year) to the other side. The inner face shows two bands of numbers bordered and separated by four engraved parallel longitudinal lines reading from left to right above: 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 and below: 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1. The number 12 appears midway between the two lines. All the numbers lie approximately opposite the point on the outer face of the band where the months are marked and where the band is pierced.
Diameter: 39.26mm, Height: 10.53mm, Thickness: 1.62mm, Weight: 11.5g
The metal is mid-green in colour with a slightly pitted patina.
Some examples of these 'poke' or pocket dials sundials still have a short chain attached to the loop (see Bailey, Detector Finds 2, 1993, p.9 no.3). Bailey (ibid.) also illustrates a similar pocket sundial with the letters of the month on the exterior, and a similar set of two lines of numbers on the interior, on page 8, no.1, which is dated from the 16th to the 17th century. Although pocket sundials span the 16th - 18th centuries they are predominantly from the 17th and as such on the balance of probability this example is dated to the 17th century.Poke363623160017504NARC2024-03-14T15:19:16Z2024-03-15T12:00:03Z11.510.53PAS65F31574001FC339.261.6217121141423737175287306NorthamptonshireSouth NorthamptonshireAbthorpeSP654652.10851804-1.05231094bands.shops.handy10NARC-315C15Copper alloy10627IncompleteFairPOST MEDIEVALx41047MiddleLatePOST MEDIEVALx41047x41047Metal detectorReturned to finderNARC-31574F_65f3161c62e35.jpg1268004images/elliecox05/East MidlandsCertain12024-03-15T12:00:03.356Zfinds-11555621155562NARC-314855STRAP FITTINGPOST MEDIEVALA complete copper alloy Strap Fitting of Post-Medieval to Modern date (AD 1650-1850).
