Fragment of a medieval copper alloy single-loop buckle frame. The frame was originally pentagonal in shape with half of the outer edge consisting of two of the five sides remaining. The other two sides and the strap bar are missing to old breaks. The sides are D-shaped in section with a convex front and flat back. The remaining stub of the cross bar suggests it was thinned. The part of the outer edge adjacent to the strap bar was straight while the outer side is concave. At the junction of the two remaining sides is a separate dome headed copper alloy rivet. In the centre of the outer …

Medieval copper alloy buckle of oval frame and integral rigid plate type, of mid-13th or 14th century date The buckle is probably near-complete, perhaps missing the attachment end (with a length of 41.4mm and a weight of 4.0g). The outside edge is embellished with an integral bilobed openwork device, probably a crown. The frame is oval (giving the buckle a maximum width of 13.2mm) and is of sub-rectangular section (with a width of 1.7mm - 2.7mm and a thickness of 2.2mm). There is a circular perforation behind the frame to accommodate the copper alloy pin (with a length of 13.5mm). The …

Copper alloy buckle. Rectangular, possibly die-stamped, frame with a separate double spiked tongue mounted on a spindle. The outer edge bears the stamped image of crossed swords flanked by larger letters reading [?S]WORD MAKE with the smaller legend TRADEMARK under the swords. The reverse bears the legend BRITISH, and the central tongue bears the incised letters MAKE flanked by S-shaped scrolls, to be read as part of the same reverse legend. Gilding traces appear on the outer edge. Whitehead (1996, page 114) ascribes buckles of this form to 1720-1790 but the letter style and legends mi…

Copper alloy buckle. Cast rectangular frame with an off-centre strap bar set back from the frame. The strap bar has a slight central constriction for the pin [lost]. In profile, the frame exhibits a marked outward curvature from the strap bar. It is uncertain whether this was its original form or, as is more frequently suspected, a distortion arising from the exertion of considerable force. The form is usually associated with horse harness, but this smaller version and the uneven sizes of its loops may point to a distinct use. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Length (as found…

Copper alloy buckle. Cast oval frame of lentoid section with a central rectangular aperture and with a round section central strap bar set back from the frame. A nick on the outer edge marks the pin rest; this and the strap bar retain rust stains, suggesting the object was deposited with an iron pin attached [now lost]. The robust construction may suggest a use with horse or bridle harness. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800. Length: 38.8mm, Height: 34.0mm, Thickness (strap bar): 4.1mm, Weight: 15.36gms
