Iron strip, perhaps the blade from a knife. It is 120mm long and one end is encased in delaminating corrosion. Away from this end, it is generally around 19mm wide, with one edge straight and 3mm thick, tapering to the other edge which may represent the cutting edge. The end without the corrosion layers has the cutting edge curving up to meet the back of the blade in a rounded point. The corroded end is broken and has no evidence of a whittle tang. The strip is now bent at a slight angle about halfway along its length. It weighs 45.0g.
The identification as a knife is very t…

An incomplete cast Iron knife of Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) date. It is an early Anglo-Saxon Envision Type A knife, dating to the period c.AD450-650. Its relatively small size suggests it was used in textile manufacture. It has a worn cutting edge at the base of the blade. The preservation suggests it was deposited in a grave. The blade is triangular in cross-section, and appears to be complete (Dr Denis Sami, pers. Com.).The tang is broadly rectangular in cross-section and projects from the blade close to the back edge. It tapers in width and terminates in an old break aft…

A group of two iron knives of probable early medieval date (c.410-1066).
Knife 1:
Description: The knife remains as the complete blade and tang. The blade is oval in cross-section and triangular in plan with a straight top edge which slopes downwards slightly at the tip. At the other end, the top edge rises to a curve straightening again along the top edge of the tang which also slopes downward slightly. The bottom edge of the blade is angled consistently towards the tip where it sharply curves upwards. At the tang end, the blade meets the tang at a c.45 degree angle. The t…

A complete iron dagger guard or quillon of late Medieval to Post Medieval date (c. AD 1400 - 1600). The guard would have been for a single bladed knife or dagger.
The object is relatively simple and formed from a lozenge shape. A sub-rectangular perforation is present off centre through which the tang would pass. The surface appears undecorated and is corroded. The object has a brown patina.
Measurements: length 63.1mm, width 15.8mm, thickness 8.5mm, weight 32.03g.

A copper alloy and iron terminal from the handle of a scale tang knife of later post medieval to modern date. The object has a sheet metal copper end cap which sheaths the edges of the iron on both sides, and joins to a trefoil terminal with incised line decoration on the end. Both broad sides of the object show rusted iron, with copper alloy wire inlay next to a copper alloy rivet at the broken end, which would have created a decorative stalked trefoil motif on either side. It is not clear whether any organic or other material covered the iron.

Iron knife. A narrow pointed knife blade, with a pointed tip with angled back, otherwise parallel-sided except where corrosion has spalled away to reveal the metal core. As the presumed proximal [i.e. nearer the handle] end is the same width as the blade a scale tanged form is inferred. The mass suggests good survival of the metal. Suggested date: Late Medieval to Early Post-Medieval, 1400-1550
Length: 83mm, Width: 10mm, Thickness (includes rust): 5.3mm, Weight: 10.11gms

An incomplete Post Medieval to Modern iron and copper alloy 'Bowie' style combat knife, dating to c. AD 1700-1900. The find has a near full width, tang which has the remains of three in situ handle-side rivets. The tang would have originally formed the basis of the handle grips of wood or bone. Between the tang and the blade is a copper alloy cross guard. This is comprised of a band with a collared knop at either terminal, one of which is now bent upwards, which may be deliberate or due to old damage. Below the cross guard is a single edged blade w…

A corroded Medieval or Post-Medieval iron whittle-tang knife blade with an incomplete tang.
The back is flat, and the former cutting edge tends to taper gently and generally in a straight line, disregarding several irregular serrations, from the hilt to about 4 millimetres before the extant tip. From there it tapers more steeply and convexly to meet the back edge. The serrations seem to be a consequence of corrosion and fragmentation rather than an intentional feature.
The tang is broadly rectangular in cross-section and projects from the blade close to the back edge. It tapers in wi…

The handle tapers to the blade and has a sub oval cross section of 21.2mm by 12.8mm with one side being flatter than the other. There are small steps cut into the upper and lower surfaces near the terminal; in front of these the surfaces are facetted along the medial line to the blade. The blade is badly corroded and of uncertain shape. There are no maker's marks.

A complete probable Early Medieval iron knife dating to circa AD 500-1000. It is a whittle-tanged knife. The tang is rectangular-sectioned and tapers gently from a maximum width of 9.44mm at the junction with the blade to 5.4mm at its terminal. The blade is broadly straight-backed though there is an element of thickening at the shoulder, likely caused by corrosion rather than design. The knife becomes convex curving towards the tip. The cutting edge is slightly curved at the tip from the straight back and gently flares outwards from a width of 7.2mm to the maximum width of the bla…

An incomplete iron knife of late Medieval to Post-Medieval date (AD 1500-1700). The iron blade has a straight back, the edge curves from the knife tip (now missing) to the back where it narrows to an integral tapering tang projecting from the back of the blade. The tang is square in cross-section and the blade is V-shaped in cross-section. The blade is V-shaped in profile with portions missing due to breaks and areas of corrosion. The handle is missing.
Iron knives are difficult to date as the corrosion obscures details, and the functional designs do not vary much. In this exampl…
