A complete, Modern, silver finger ring dated AD.1939. The object comprises a silver ring formed from a coin, the coin has been hammered into the shape of a broad bezeled signet ring, though no signet is inscribed. The bezel is broadly octagonal with and the band is rectangular in cross section and irregularly hammered. A silver workhouse token dating to the early Modern period (AD 1811). The token is slightly worn across both faces but is in good condition. It is dated 1811 on the obverse and was issued by the Birmingham workhouse. Obverse: Image of workhouse with date beneath. Legend: BIRMINGHAM TOKEN ONE SHILLING Reverse: Shield of arms. Silver lid of a windcap for a pipe, mostly likely a meerschaum pipe, made of a thin sheet of silver. The top engraved with a foliate design. Around the sides are a series of 10 square shaped protrusions. This cap would originally have been fitted by a hinge to a flat plate that would have been attached to the pipe. The flat plate is likely to have been hallmarked, if English, or been plain if it is of continental manufacture. This appears to be a billon (base silver) 20-para coin of the Ottoman emperor Abdul Mejid (AH 1255-77/AD1839-61). It bears the accession date 1255 [looks like a blundered 1700] and a regnal year that may be 5 - looks like a dot (= zero, in Arabic numerals, which doesn't make sense). (Besly, Ed, pers. comm., 2012) I believe the regnal year is ٢ ie year 2. Year 0 does not exist on coins. AH dates do not exactly match AD dates. The coin was minted AD 1840/1841. Mint is قسطنطنية ie Qustantiniya/Constantinople, present day Istanbul in Turkey. (Cannon, Paul, pers. comm., June 2016)
