Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Medeival to Post Medieval right side iron ox shoe, one of a pair, the other missing, dating to c AD 1250 - 1900.  Unlike horses, oxen have cloven or bifurcated hooves so when working, their shoes had to be made in two pieces. It is a 'comma' shape, rectangular in section. Ox shoes commonly had four piercings for attachment along the outer edge, but this one apparently has only three. One can be seen and is oval in shape, the other two retain their nails, with oval heads and rectangular section spikes. The shoe is heavily rusted but retains its shape, b…

An incomplete Post Medieval to Modern iron and copper alloy 'Bowie' style combat knife, dating to c. AD 1700-1900. The find has a near full width, tang which has the remains of three in situ handle-side rivets. The tang would have originally formed the basis of the handle grips of wood or bone. Between the tang and the blade is a copper alloy cross guard. This is comprised of a band with a collared knop at either terminal, one of which is now bent upwards, which may be deliberate or due to old damage. Below the cross guard is a single edged blade w…

A complete probably Post Medieval iron wedge, dating to c AD 1550 - 1800. It is square headed , the surface of the head slightly convex, angled downwards. In profile it is sub rectangular with the slope of the head at one end of its shaft, and a U shape at the other. On one side of this profile there is a step where the thickness of the shaft suddenly narrows, perhaps as a result of its tight fit with another object.  On the other plain, the shaft tapers from the head to become almost flat with a sharp edge at the base. Wedges like these were hammered into the sockets of…

On one part of the ring the hoop widens a little, then flattens into a sub circular feature which is pierced with a circular hole (diameter c5.5mm). Likely a leash ring.
