RB Part of bow, leg and foot of Hod Hill type brooch, the metal is rather thin. From the (old) break, the bow is defined on either side by a raised rib running its length, while down the middle runs another (slightly thicker) raised rib. At the point where it reaches the leg, the bow is flanked on either side by two tiny projecting knobs. Below this are two horizontal ribs, between which the leg curves in then out, as though 'waisted'. Below the lower rib is a smaller waist, which then curves inward again in a long smooth line running the rest of the leg-length till it flares out slig…

RB Incomplete Horse and Rider brooch, pin missing (spring mechanism). Very like Hattatt no.159 from Cold Kitchen Hill, Wiltshire, with much of the horse's tail and both legs missing. There are four cells of which three still contain traces of enamel, two a greeney colour and one a dark red. Length (nose to tail) 32mm. Bayley and Butcher (2004, 175) note that the quality of this design of brooch is variable (see Hattatt 2000, 359; fig. 218). They state that there are strong indications of a religious connection with this brooch type, with significant quantities being found at temple…

Cast saucer brooch with six running spirals, pin missing. A central boss is surrounded by a ring which in turn is surrounded by a six-pointed star. Each point of the star extends to become a tongue, curving to the right in a half circle and joining an incoming tongue, offshooting from the flange above the next spiral to the right, bearing left and curving back on itself. Thus the spiral is defined. Surrounding the running spirals is a plain flange and projecting upwards from this and slightly outwards is the rim. The flange and the central boss are a little higher in relief than the s…

Lead object, weighing 159.02g. It is roughly oval in shape and flat on the underside while the top side is convex with a circular stamp. One edge is smoothly curved, and looks as though its shape has been determined while molten and in the bottom of a pan. The other edges are broken and rough but retain their oval shape. These objects are sometimes known as palm guards, and thought to be used whilst working with leather.

Circular seal matrix (diam. 17mm) with conical hexagonally-faceted handle ending in a pierced triangular terminal. Around a central shield with three horizontal fish lying across it are the outlines of four smaller shields to top, bottom and either side, dividing the remaining parts of the matrix into four. One of the shield-shapes is outlining the bottom of the central shield and is therefore missing its horizontal line. The other three contain a fleur de lys. The edges of the matrix itself are badly worn and the inscription is mostly lost. The ‘S’ is lying on its side. S?…

Cast tin-bronze coin, about 20mm in diameter, with a flange of about 2mm on both sides. At the thickest point it measures about 3mm. It weighs 6.05g. The reverse shows an animal (a dog? or horse?) with a pellet between its legs and another in front of its chest. If the animal is a horse it is crudely represented with a very short neck and legs. The obverse is very worn, but seems to be decorated with a central pellet and at least four more. There are several faint lines suggesting that it may be subdivided into ?six or more sections. The coin is most similar to a type of …
