The figure has a disproportionately large head with crudely detailed facial features; the eyes and mouth are deep incised circular pits and the nose a raised sub-triangular bump. The hair is marked by a transverse groove with faint vertical striations. At the neck of the figure, which is wide, are two transverse grooves, possibly suggesting a neck-ring or collar. Copper alloy possible mount fragment. Cast straight-sided plate with a collared rounded end with a rivet or other copper alloy inset; if indeed a mount the object is presumably broken at its narrower end. There is the suspicion of a stepped [at expanded end] and partly keeled form [towards the putative broken end] to the display side, though no section views were available to confirm this point. Copper alloy mount. Cast chip-carved mount with a thin layer of rust covering large areas but not obscuring the nature of decoration. The rust probably comes from the iron rivets which once attached the mount to an important object. The back is plain. This is probably from an ecclesiastical context [cf. Whitby parallels] such as a book cover or a shrine. Another part of the same object was reported from Melton Ross, making this a ‘find of note’ for its significance in tracking the members of a single Viking raiding party. An accompanying text extract suggests an ‘8th …

Copper alloy and iron mount fragment. A fragment of cast copper alloy with straight edges and ends and retaining substantial rusted iron accretions, inluding a bolt or fixing, and staining from the apparent loss of another. The object is twisted and torn as if by rough removal from its setting. The display side bears a wandering interlaced ladder-pattern crudely incised; the source record identifies this as Viking-Age.
