A complete flint probable tranchet axe of Mesolithic date (c.10,000-4000BC). Description: The object is sub-rectangular in plan and broadly oval in cross section. It has a blunt, roughly flattened butt and sharp, rounded distal end which has some later damage on one side. It is bifacially worked with invasive, scaled, semi-abrupt retouch producing large scars. The object is translucent mottled grey and the dorsal face has light grey patination. Measurements: Length: 96mm; width: 45.4mm; thickness: 28.5mm; weight: 150.24g.

A flint pebble macehead manufactured from a naturally perforated flint sponge fossil pebble of light grey flint. The object is sub triangular in shape and has been roughly worked with hard hammered flaking around all sides; the central piercing is unworked and comprises the natural void of the sponge body. There is extensive battering damage around the exterior, likely from use. Artefacts of this type are presumed to be of Mesolithic date.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint 'Thames pick' of Mesolithic date, 154.5mm in length, struck from a long flint pebble or nodule of dark grey flint. The proximal end / butt end of the tool retains its light brown cortex and the cross section of the tool appears to follow the original sub rounded profile of the nodule, with only the front portion being worked with hard hammered removals. The cutting edge is wedge shaped and appears to have some use-related damage; originally the tip may have been shaped with one or more tranchet removals but these are no longer particularly clear.

This is a core rejuvenation flake, at the top of the flake is remnants of a prepared platform. The dorsal has a prominent off-centre ridge running down its length, the flake removal taken from one direction.  The ventral side has a large bulb of percussion at the base. The flint is covered in a creamy patina with grey patches.

Flint debitage. Six tiny [of lengths between 24.5mm to 9.4mm] flakes with scars from the removal of narrow or parallel flakes from their dorsal sides, and with flat or bulbar ventral surfaces. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the objects have subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest their incorporation in gravel. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC Combined Weight: 5.54gms

Flint possible core fragment. A small chunk with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and  with a rounded or bulbar ventral surface. A creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest its incorporation in gravel. More than one episode of working is possible. As the find-spot is not on chalk the patina may hint that it has been imported. Flint core. A small irregular chunk with narrow parallel flakes removed by multangular working. A dense creamy patina across all struck surfaces suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, and iron-spotting may suggest its incorporation in gravel. Probably mid-brown flint debitage. A thin flake with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side  and with a flat ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge. Fire-crazed overall. A creamy patina lost at a chip at one end [which reveals the tint of the flint] may suggest that the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment, and hence that it may have been imported to its find spot, which is not on chalk. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC Length: 31.4mm, Width: 10.8mm, Thickness: 4.8mm, Weight: 1.78gms

Patinated flint debitage with some iron-stained spots. Seven thin flakes [of lengths between 33.8mm and 20.3mm], all with long narrow parallel flakes struck from their dorsal surfaces. The dorsal surfaces are either flat or, for the three smallest flakes, slightly concave. The patina may indicate the objects have endured exposure to a calcareous environment. As the find-spot is not on chalk, this might hint at the importation of chalk and flints, as for building, road-making or marling, in which artefacts were accidentally incorporated. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000BC Com…

A secondary core trimming or rejuvenation flake of Mesolithic or later date, struck from a dark grey flint and 42.5mm in length. The flake is curved, with a small striking platform at the proximal end with a low bulbar scar suggesting soft-hammer removal. There are a number of parallel removal scars on the proximal half of the dorsal surface, including one which has resulted in a hinge fracture. A large patch of brown coloured cortex remains on the curved distal end.

Flint implement, possibly a double-sided scraper. While there is certainly retouch marks, there is nothing to suggest use-wear, although it certainly has the shape and appearance congruent with a Mesolithic bladed tool. There is no evidence of ripple marks on its ventral surface, which would suggest that it is not a primary flake. There are two patches of cortex on the object, both on its dorsal surface; one under the sharpened edge, on the left-hand side, and the other at the very top of the piece. As the cortex only accounts for c.20% of the piece, this tool was probably crafted fro…

A complete flint probable Core Rejuvenation Flake of Mesolithic date (9000-3450 BC). The object is conical in shape and exhibits a single striking platform. There are multiple negative flake removals from blade production. The ventral surface is flat with two negative scars. All edges with the exception of the striking platform have rough semi-abrupt retouch and suggests the object is a utilised flake. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flake. The flint is dark grey in colour. Length: 32.30mm, Width: 28.53mm, Thickness: 9.66mm, Weight: 10.8g.

A flint flake or bladelet of Mesolithic date (c. 9000 - 4000 BC). The flint is grey in colour. It is a secondary flake with a tiny area of cortex on the distal end of the flake remaining. The flake has a glossy surface, with a scattering of pale grey inclusions on the dorsal face. In plan it is sub-rectangular and in cross-section it is sub-triangular. At the proximal end, the bulb of percussion is missing due to a transverse break. However, the conchoidal fracture marks are present on the ventral surface; they are shallow, indicating that a soft hammer has bee…
