An early-medieval silver Carolingian denier of Charles the Bald (AD 840-77) or later, monogram/METVLLO type dating from the AD 860s-c.925, mint: Melle, France. Weight 1.52g, Diam 20.9mm, Thickness 1mm. Ref: Coupland 2015: 70, 75.
The coin is in overall good condition but has a small tear at the top of the coin. On the obverse the bottom of this is crescent shaped and possibly slightly lifted from the surface suggesting that this tear resulted from the testing - pecking - of the coin to check its quality. Such pecking is typically related to a Viking bullion economy and would sugg…

An Early Medieval (c. AD 822-840) silver denier of Carolingian Francia, issued by Louis the Pious. [XPISTIANO REL]IGIO reverse type. Only a small fragment of the coin remains, roughly a quarter which appears to have been intentionally cut. On the remaining reverse the corner of a church design can be seen. Mint uncertain.
A more complete example can be found at LIN-F6C6E1.
Discussion
Coins of this type are unusual finds in the British Isles. Only three other deniers of Louis the Pious are recorded on the PAS database. On the Corpus of Early Medieval coin finds (https://emc.fi…

An early-medieval silver Merovingian (Frankish) denier, dating from c.675-750 (Belfort 5726-30). Ref: Belfort 1892: 207-8.
The reverse of the coin matches those shown in Belfort nos. 5726-30 but the obverse is slightly harder to place, in part owing to its condition. Most akin to Belfort 5726 although this has no cross in front of the face. Many other deniers exhibit crosses in front of the bust.
The place in the sequence of deniers is difficult to assess but given that this coin is a little corroded it indicates that the silver content is not high, suggesting the coin should be…

Silver denier of Charles the Bald, Carolingian King of the West Franks (840-77). There are coins of similar design issued by Charlemagne, but the style is quite different. Coins of Charles the Bald have often been found in the area of the Danelaw, where they evidently circulated in fairly large numbers in the late 9th and early 10th century, but a find from the Isle of Wight is unusual.
