Stone rubber or polisher. A fine-grained Sandstone chunk, possibly half of an originally cylindrical object, with smooth curved sides and flat top with one groove near its edge. The other two adjacent flat sides are both slightly ridged or grooved in the same direction, with about four ridges or grooves passing across that face which preserves these details best. In its present form, the object sits well in the hand if either of the flat faces are used. The improvised use of rubbers and sharpeners and polishers extends from Prehistory, through the Roman period and into the Early Mediev…

This is a small group of nine identified firestones is being recorded as a representative sample of a much larger group of firestones locally dispersed on a field associated with anglo scandinavian and late neolithic to early bronze age finds. The brown stones appear to be from the same large pebble. They are crumbly in texture , appear to be porous, break easily and have fracture lines on the remaining outer surface. They appear to have red to dark brown discolouration probably associated with fire damage. The largst piece…

The tapered elongated cylindrical shape is typical of those used for sharpening scythes and sickles. Similar stones in modern materials are still in production (see attached image). Sickl…

Neolithic slate tanged arrowhead. Made on dark grey slate, snapped and flaked all over to shape. The tip is still quite sharp. A thin layer of the slate has been removed on the ventral face to thin it even more for hafting. Has some microlithic similarities e.g. obliquely backed point, but as no other Mesolithic slate implements have been identified in the wider local assemblage it is more likely to be a Neolithic or Early Bronze Age tanged arrowhead.

A Group I type greenstone axe head, ovate in plan, lozenge-shaped in profile, and round at the butt end and oval at the blade end in cross section. The cutting edge is asymmetrically curved and the butt end is pointed. All surfaces would have originally been pecked and ground but the majority of the axe is now deeply pitted due to weathering with polishing only remaining on the butt and blade end, on both faces, but more remains on the dorsal face of the blade. The deeply pecked face is marked by lighter areas of abrasion which have been caused by later damage, and there are some pa…

A modern stone votive model depicting the Hindu deity Ganesha. The model comprises a flat, domed panel with a narrow ledge at the base. The elephant-god Ganesha is depicted dancing on the ledge. Ganesha is depicted facing forwards, with his right arm is bent upwards, and his left arm down by his waist. Engraved lines decorate the back panel above the shoulders and also to the sides of the head. Further lines are seen across the waist, perhaps representing a belt or band also running diagonally down from the left shoulder. The model is in a good condition but the features are rather wo…

Cornish Gabbro polished stone axehead, as identified by the finder with reference to advice kindly offered by Mike Boyd, emeritus Keeper of Natural History for Hull Museum. A lentoid section polished axe with a curving cutting edge at its widest part, tapering slightly to a rounded butt. A slight chip on one side has been smoothed in antiquity. This might have been damage associated with the hafting of the axehead. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 117mm, Width: 72.9mm, Thickness: 35.1mm, Weight: [in slight excess of] c.500gms

An incomplete polished stone Langdale Tuff axehead of Neolithic date (3500-2400 BC). The handaxe is broken at the cutting edge and at the butt end. The surface of the axe is granular but smooth with a distinct blue green hue. The object is sub-rectangular in plan and tapers inward toward the butt and is sub-ovate is section with slightly flattened sides. The blade end tapers out to the sided and in along the blade edge. The axe is broken at the blade and along one side. It is possible that it has been ritually broken. The object is a Langdale polished Axehead, called as such due to…

Stone perforated axe-hammer of probably the very late Neolithic or early Bronze Age period, dating from c. BC 2500 - c. BC 1800. Axe-hammers are also known as Battle Axes and some of the smaller examples have been recorded as perforated maces (mace-heads). The differences between these types / classifications are uncertain and the artefact type as a whole is in need of reassessment in line with modern discoveries and approaches to artefact studies. The axe-hammer is probably formed of a fine grained sandstone. The rock has yet to be properly identified by an expert. In plan th…

A small Group I type greenstone axe head, ovate in plan, lozenge-shaped in profile and oval in cross section. The cutting edge is asymmetrically curved and the butt is faceted. All surfaces have been ground; the edges are slightly pitted due to weathering but traces of polishing remain on both faces, especially at the blade end. There is a circular area of deep pecking on one face, approximately 22 mm in diameter and on the opposite face are slight traces of pecking, suggesting that the tool was perhaps re-used for hammering or as a small mortar. The deeply pecked face is marked by se…

A complete though probably unfinished stone axehead probably a roughout of Neolithic date, c. 3500 - 2100 BC discovered below the foundations of a cottage garden wall. The axehead is possibly of the Graig Lwyd Group VII axe - the patina looks the type and the white speckles on a blue-grey matrix is typical of the rock type or it could be an epidiotised greenstone Group VI Langdale axe. The axe head is trapezoidal in plan with a pointed ovate section. The surfaces are rough with a chip to one side of the butt edge. The unpolished nature of the object suggests it was not properly finish…

A carved stone head, often loosely referred to as a 'Celtic' head. 'Celtic' heads are found in some numbers in Britain, the great majority of which, including this one, are un-dateable. The head is carved from sandstone. The object has been identified from the attached photographs. The head has an elongated oval flat face with recessed lentoid eyes. The nose is long flattened, expanding in width towards the nostrils resulting in a sub-triangular form. The lips are worn. The rear of the head is flattened with less signs of weathering. There is no visible decoration on the rear of th…

An incomplete Roman puddingstone beehive quern stone, dating to the period AD 1-150 There are a few types of Puddingstone, Green (2017) suggests that it is French and has been imported. A possible suggestion for this importation is that the stones used for this conglomerate are extremely hard, so hard over in Hertfordshire that it was very difficult to use, but due to its tough exterior, it produced almost grit free flour, therefore a much demanded product (Green 2017). French stones are earlier than Hertfordshire products, and were in fact the basis of a whole industry, as it spre…

Grey-green hard dense rough-textured gritty probably volcanic stone, polished axehead. The origin of the material is uncertain, probably from Western Britain - Cornwall, Wales and Scotland are among the possible sources, as might be glacial drift found locally but incorporating rocks from distant parts. The rough texture is markedly dissimilar to that of the frequently reported Group 6 axes. The axehead is straight sided with a curved cutting edge which remains as sharp as its gritty material would permit. It is widest at the cutting edge, tapering thence to a rounded butt. The axe…
