An incomplete possible whetstone of uncertain date. The stone is lentoid in profile and circular in section constructed from fine grained sandstone with a high mica component. Each end of the object has broken away. A deep linear groove measuring 5.16mm in width runs transverse across the centre of one face, possibly caused by sharpening tools. This form of whetstone is fairly ubiquitous throughout history. Other whetstones made from this type of stone have been recorded in association with early-medieval finds. The whetstone is sub-trapezoidal in plan and sub-square in section with the four longer faces being very smooth. The whetstone is broken at both ends. One face has two, straight, longitudinal gouges, probably as a result of the blade-sharpening process.

A fragment of whetstone or hone, probably early-medieval to medieval in date. The whetstone has been manufactured from very fine-grained, blue-greymudstone, similar to the Jurassic rocks found on the coast of North Yorkshire. It is sub-triangular in plan and sub-oval in section. It is broken across its widest part and shows the very fine internal structure of the stone. The narrow end is complete apart from some minor post-depositional damage. The outer surfaces are very smooth and show some flat facets, probably as a result of the blade-sharpening process.

Roman to Modern cigar shaped whetstone. The finder's partner is a qualified geologist and says the sharpening stone is made from a "Fine to medium grained, quartz cemented sandstone, probably local millstone grit but its source location in the Bowland stratigraphic sequence is not known. The visible striations are not natural." Falttened areas or facets are typical of stones that have been well used. Object is long and cylindrical in shape but with flattened sides. The object has a head, which appears to be rounded; it then tapers in slightly to a 'neck' and then expands out again. A complete Early Medieval whetstone, dating to the period c. AD 410-1066. The whetstone is rectangular in cross section, and broadly rectangular in plan. It tapers to a rounded terminal at its apex, and a circular perforation measuring 5mm is present towards this end. An inscribed Roman stone stilus sharpener / whetstone. The stone is fine-grained green (slate?). The piece is 46.7mm long, 21.7mm wide and 8.2mm deep. There is a deep groove along the upper face where the stilus would be sharpened. The Latin inscription on the front face is: [M?]ΛNDΛCVS MATTΛVI which probably translates as 'Mandacus(?), son of Mattavus'. It is a possible Celtic / British name and patronym.

The whetstone is made of a fine silt stone, possibly from the Welsh borders. In plan the whetstone is an elongated trapezoidal shape. The two long side edges are not quite parallel. The wide lower edge is slightly rounded and abraded, but maybe the original edge. The opposite edge is a broken edge. The upper surface of the stone is smooth and the edges rounded, and tapers in depth towards the lower edge. The reverse is a flat face, but is not a smooth as the other face.

Post Medieval, copper alloy trade weight? 14mm in diameter and 3mm thick. The weight is in good condition with a green patina and a weight of 2.59grams. The weight is marked with the ewer of the London founders company who issued the weights and has what appears to be a crown minus the monarchs initial? The shape of the weight and the marks fit with the smaller ones issued between 1590 and 1826, but without an initial its not datable.
