Object Date: 8th century Description: Finger ring fragments Five fragments of a late Saxon, originally gilt and probably niello-inlaid silver finger ring. All fragments are joining and represent a complete ring with a decorated, rounded bezel. The whole ring is of flat cross-section and the bezel has a fine split in one place. Faint incised, geometric ornament is still visible on the band, which originally overlapped and may have been soldered at the narrowest point; however that join has come apart in antiquity. TREASURE CASE : 2007 T445. Viking-period hacksilver fragment from the terminal of an Irish type of brooch. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the fragment of over 90%, with copper, gold and lead. The find comprises an irregular, four-sided fragment of cast plate which has been cut from the terminal of a bossed penannular brooch; length, 20 mm. Gold finger ring with a slightly misshapen hoop, which broadens at the shoulders to meet the bezel. The bezel is comprised of a rectangular red glass to imitate a precious stone, in a rectangular setting. Arched decoration surrounds the setting. The bezel of this ring has close parallels with 2004 T485 (see Treasure Annual Report 2004, no.369), but this ring is a 19th-century imitation of a medieval-style ring. Therefore, this is classed as not Treasure.

Copper alloy Roman radiate possibly of Claudius II (AD 268-70) (Reece Period 13), possibly [PAX AVGVSTI], Pax standing left with branch and transverse sceptre. Mint of Rome. Cunetio p. 136, cf. 2190-1. It was originally suggested that this was possibly a radiate of Carausius (AD 286-93) (Reece Period 14) based on the bust and the fact that Pax is a very common reverse type in his reign. This coin has been considered for Sam Moorhead's corpus for RIC.

CURATOR'S REPORT Description of Find Rectangular Roman silver bezel from a 'Brancaster' type finger ring, decorated with punched and incised decoration. Outer border of punched dots, inner design of two back to back curving lines, possibly representing dolphins (?); in between the curved lines is more punched decoration in the form of a triangular motif. It has been published by Gerrard and Henig (2017, 248/pl. 5.44; cat. 44).

Treasure case : 2007 T178 A metal object of unusual form, consisting of a central cylinder, which is hollow, though sealed at both ends. Each end is decorated with a band of cabling or rope-work. Entwined around the cylinder is a knot of twisted wires contained within a cabled border. The object is gold, but of indeterminate date. Dimensions: length 17 mm, width 14 mm. As the find can not be securely dated to pre-1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Cast lead weight with decorated and gilt copper alloy fragment embedded in the lead. The object comprises a sub-rectangular lead base, sub-rectangular in section. The face has a piece of carved and gilded copper alloy embedded in it; this piece appears to have been both shaped and cut, though the egdes are largely enveloped by the lead. A hollow silver lace chape, strap fitting, dating to the 14th to 15th Century. The chape has been formed from a rolled, cylinder of sheet silver, there is no joint in the cylinder. The chape has a wide open end, into which the lace would have fitted. The chape then tapers to the terminal which has a thin collar and terminates with a rounded knop. The sides of the chape are decorated with incised linear and floral designs, typical of the 14th to15th Century. Similar copper alloy chapes have been recorded onto the PAS database, for example SUSS-F7F9C6.

A large fragment of whetstone, which is probably early-medieval in date. Numberous whetstones made in this material have been found in the East Ridings of Yorkshire in Viking contexts. The stone from which the whetstone has been carved is a fine-grained Mica Schist, sourced in Scandinavia. The stone has been chipped and ground into the whetstone shape and has large chamfered edges. The chamfered edges are still very obvious. Weight: 94g.

A cast copper alloy pin, probably dating to the middle Anglo-Saxon period (AD 720 – 850). The pin has a flattened biconical head (globular), which has been crudely multi-facetted. The shaft is long and tapering from the conical lower part of the pin head. The head is undecorated. The shaft is bent and broken. There is a small narrow collar around the shaft, at the junction between the shaft and the head. The metal is a mid greyish-green colour and the original patina survives as a smooth, glossy surface – but it is also quite pitted.
