A copper alloy probable handle from a vessel of probable Roman date (AD 43-410). It is T-shaped in form, the trunk of the object curling behind itself to form a loop, terminating in a foot just behind (but not touching) the cross-bar. The cross-bar retains two separate copper alloy rivets. The cross-bar is rectangular in cross-section with rounded short ends and measures 38.9mm in width. Either arm-end extends inwards at the centre to form a trunk composed of two ribs. This results in the central third of the cross-bar having a V-shaped cleft, filled with moulded decoration in the fo…

A lead pot repair of probable Roman date (AD 43-410). Overall it measures 40.50mm x 32.75mm x 12.95mm and weighs 56.93g. It comprises of a worn potsherd from the side of a vessel and two sheets of lead of a similar size. The potsherd is 2.75mm thick and is curved. The lead sheet on the concave side is 2.25mm thick while the lead on the convex side varies from c.4mm to c.7mm thick. The potsherd comes from the body of a vessel made with a red fabric which has no visible inclusions and is therefore probably fine ware (hence the probable Roman date).

One base sherd (with damaged foot-ring) of Roman Samian ware. The base fragment measures 35.41x28.90x5.59mm, while the foot ring measures 33.58mm in diameter and is 11.19mm tall. Thus the dimensions of the fragment are 35.41x33.58x16.78mm. It weighs 12.83g. On the inside surface of the base is a rectangular stamp with IXI in relief. Samian ware was exported from Gaul during the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Brenda Dickinson comments "the base is likely to be from a South Gaulish form 27g cup. The IXI stamp is anepigraphic (without a legend) but there is another example of it from the Bin…

A probable cast lead pot mend, used to mend a broken vessel in order to lengthen the period of use after damage had occurred. One section is broadly sub-oval and flat in profile, with the section to the other side of the slot pyramidal. There are no discernible pottery fragments within the slot. The repair has corroded to an off-white colour. Unfortunately such repairs are not diagnostic; however, a tentative Roman date is offered given finds made in the vicinity.
