A complete Early-Medieval hanging bowl hook-mount, probably dating to the 7th century AD. Description: The object is circular with a hooked attachment projecting from the edge. This hook is convex on its upper face and with flat sides; it has a slight concave curve on its underside. The main body of the mount has champleve enamel cell work formed from alternating wide triangles and thin triangles, four of each. The wide triangles form a cross pattee shape. The triangles have a relatively wide reserved border of copper alloy, and within this is enamel which survives as a light gre…

Almost complete copper-alloy bifurcated handle mount from an Early Saxon stave-built bucket. The beaks of the two bird's head terminals meet the base of the upright. Most of one head is missing, and part of the eye/rivet hole of the other is missing. The handle attachment hole in a rounded terminal at the top is also incomplete. The central part of the upright is triangular in cross-section with a hollowed reverse, and the lower part consists of a moulded animal head above a transverse rib, with an integral rivet on the reverse. The chunky cast construction is notable. The breaks …

A sherd from the incurved rim of a bowl. The fabric is hard-fired and banded with a pink oxidised inner surface and a grey reduced outer surface. There are profuse, angular inclusions of bivalve shell with grain size ranging from 3mm, poorly sorted by size. The sherd appears hand-made rather than wheel-thrown and the surface unfinished. Breaks are fresh and un-abraded but there is some abrasion to other surfaces. The curve of the sherd suggests a bowl with rim of diameter c. 210mm. The sherd is similar to the Lincoln-Kiln type and other local shelly-wares from the 9th-10th…

An Early Medieval copper alloy bird-shaped hooked mount, probably from a hanging bowl. The body is sub-triangular in shape, forming the spread wings and tail of the bird, with two concave edges and one long straight edge from which the three-dimensional head extends. It is thin (c.2.3mm thick) and very slightly rounded in profile. The 'tail' corner has a trefoil terminal, with the two outer lobes decorated with a punched dot. Probable Early Medieval bucket mount fragment, made from thin copper-alloy sheet, and roughly rectangular. The fragment is slightly curved in profile and this may be intentional. The fragment is decorated with repoussé dots arranged in two lines with a zig-zag of dots in between. The dots are convex on the exterior and concave on the reverse. One edge of the object is parallel to one of the lines and may be original; all the other edges are broken. In the centre of the zig-zag, towards the edge, there is a incomplete circular perforation, probably for attachment to the wood of the bu…

Body sherd from a Roman grey ware vessel decorated with waved, parallel, incised lines executed with a comb-like tool below which is a broad, incised horizontal groove. This sherd is of interest and it parallels the fabric and decoration used on the wheel-thrown, Roman type vessels use as urns at the Cleatham, Lincs. and Millgate, Newark Anglo-Saxon cemeteries (Leahy 2007, p. 126-7, Figs. 63 and 66, Pl. 25). As this form of decoration is otherwise uncommon this sherd, found between the two sites, is of note.
