Medieval to Post Medieval c. AD 1279-1600, uniface, lead token or weight, one face bears, in relief, a long cross with a pellet in each of its arms. The back is plain. Diameter 25.8mm, Thickness 2.5mm, Mass 5.77g. The design on this token appears to have been based on that seen on a Medieval silver penny of 'long-cross', (AD1279-1489) although conservatism may have allowed to series to continue to a later date. Other examples bear letters some of which look Post Medieval in style. The function of these lead discs is also open to doubt. Some may been used as weights (see Egan, 20…

AD 1200-1700, uniface, lead token or weight, one face bears, in relief, two curving lines linked by a transverse line the significance of which is unknown. The back of the disc is plain but has a raised edge within which is a series of concentric rings. Diameter 19.6mm, Thickness 2.9mm, Mass 6.23g. The function of these lead discs is also open to doubt. Some may been used as weights (see Egan, 2010, Fig. 232) for which a 14th century date is suggested, or had a religious role, being given to communicants either before or at Mass. They may have served as …

Lead token of Medieval or Post Medieval (1300-1750) date. The token is in poor condition and, while it appears that decoration was present it is no longer possible to interpret it. Diameter 17.2mm, Thickness 1.4mm, Mass 2.40g. With some justification, Ivor Noel Hume described lead tokens as 'that least understood item in the numismatic field' (Artifacts of Colonial America, 1969, 173). He was able to quote exampes ranging in date from a piece bearing the arms of Elizabeth I (1558-1603) to one bearing a date of 1714. That said, other examples come from Medieval contexts, at Trigg La…

A silver object reported found at Drayton Bassett, Staffordshire. The object is a piedfort striking of the coin known as denier parisis of Philip IV the Fair, King of France (1285-1314). The type was originally produced in 1307-10 (ref : Duplessy no. 221; an older reference, Lafaurie, no. 224, includes a record of a piedfort striking of the denomination). Finds of single coins are not normally considered as potential Treasure. However, non-functional coins or coin-like objects do have the potential to be so considered. The first piedfort reported under the Treasure system was found …
