An incomplete copper alloy buckle plate of early-medieval date. The plate is sub-rectangular with slightly incurved sides, and two straight ends, one with hinge loops for attachment to the buckle frame. The attachment end is split to take the strap, but the underplate has broken away (worn break). The plate has five circular holes. Two at the attachment end retain iron rivets; one centrally nearby, and two near the hinge loops, are empty and may have always been merely decorative. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with a central sub-rectangular or trapezoidal panel of …

A medieval buckle made of dark grey-green copper alloy. It could be seen as a double-loop buckle, with one oval and one keyhole-shaped loop, or as a single-loop oval frame with a small integral plate pierced with a keyhole-shaped hole. The copper-alloy pin survives between the two. The oval frame is roughly oval in cross-section. The outside edge has a central point, grooved to form a pin rest; either side of this point is a ridge which runs across the top and down the outer face. The inside edge of the loop is made from thicker metal, appearing like a square block with a spur p…

The outer edge of the frame is wide and undecorated and the pin no longer remains. Where the frame meets the strap bar it terminates in zoomorphic knops which are most probably crude representations of animal heads confronting across the bar. Zoomorphic terminals are a common feature of buckles of this period and are intended to represent some sort of quadruped's head, such as a lion or leopard. The metal has a dark reddish-brown pati…

An incomplete copper alloy buckle plate of 9th-century date. It is made from a single thin sheet of copper alloy, which tapers from a wider to a narrower end. Both ends are incomplete. At the wider end there are two sub-rectangular projections with a rectilinear slot in between; this may be the remains of two hinge loops to attach the plate to a frame. At the other end are two incomplete circular rivet holes. Between the rivet holes is an engraved sub-triangular shape, two sides concave and the other convex, which may be related to the 'fan-shaped' motifs found on 9th-century strap-en…

The pin is also simple with no decoration. No constriction for the pin is present. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 64-65) state that a constriction "is generally an indication of a brooch rather than a buckle", suggesting this example is a buckle. An incomplete and modified late Visigothic copper-alloy buckle plate of Earl-Medieval date (circa AD 600/40 - 710/20). The buckle plate is of the 'lyre-shaped' type, though the rounded terminal is all that remains, with three integral knops set radially around the surviving edge. The rim of the plate is slightly raised, with an internal circumferential groove serving as the border for the central decorative motif. This motif features Style II ornamentation, consisting of a lozenge-shaped arrangement of double mouldings with curved ends extending towards the rim. The resulting fields a…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy buckle of late Roman date. The zoomorphic buckle is of Hawkes and Dunning type IIA being symmetrical in design. Roughly one third of the buckle remains consisting of a curved frame with ovate section and both ends terminate in worn breaks though a slight projection remains at the strap bar end. On the outer edge of the frame is an integrally cast projection in the form of a perching bird though the finer detail has been lost due to wear. The remaining fragment of the brooch appears otherwise undecorated. The metal has a light brownish-green patina and…
