Description: Silver asymmetric double-loop buckle frame, perhaps from a shoe or spur. One loop is rectangular and the other is D-shaped, with a pointed outside edge. The frame is D-shaped in cross-section, and the only decoration is an oblique groove at either outer corner of the rectangular loop; one of these grooves is now worn away at its outer end. The frame is thickened in the centre where it is drilled to take a separate bar, and the buckle is now bent up on either side of this hole, which is broken through to the reverse with the bar missing. The pin is also missi…

Complete copper alloy zoomorphic Roman buckle. Single loop with narrower strap bar and outer loop moulded into the shape of two confronted "dolphins" with dorsal crests, developed into outward facing animal heads; probably birds, or very debased horses heads; - the latter being a more common type. The eyes of all four beasts are comprised of punched ring and dots, with wriggle-work decoration along the sides of the loops representing scales, and similar work on one of the bird heads representing feathers. Straight grooves running along the back of both of the birds' heads probably rep…

Description: Fragment of gilded silver buckle, probably of 11th- or 12th-century date. The bar survives complete, with some casting flaws producing cavities. It is oval in cross-section, 3mm thick and 4mm wide in the centre but 5mm wide at either end. Two stubs of the relief-decorated frame survive, both curving, implying that the frame was oval. They are also wider and a little flatter than the bar. The decoration seems to show animal heads biting the ends of the bar. What appears to be the upper jaw, on the exterior of the buckle frame, has a squared-off end decorated with a pa…

Copper-alloy buckle frame with rectangular frame and integrally cast plate. The frame is a long rectangle, now with slightly incurved top and bottom edges and an outcurved outside edge. The curves are very symmetrical and it seems that this was the original shape. The pin hole is in the centre of the inside edge and is now blocked with iron corrosion. Behind this is a narrower transverse moulding and then the rest of the short plate is made up of three long straight relief fronds. The central one is lozengiform and ends in a small boss; the most complete side one is narrow and long an…

Description: Post-medieval silver double-loop buckle, both loops trapezoidal, flaring towards the outside edge. The trapezoidal-section frame has a sub-hemispherical knop projecting halfway along each outside edge, and likewise at the sides as an extension of the bar.
