A silver buckle of late Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 800 - 1200. The decoration is perhaps of Carolingian style, or maybe Carolingian inspired Winchester style, or transitional from Urnes/Ringerike to more Medieval forms. The buckle has an expanded and angled outer edge and sides, which are chunky and deeply moulded. There is a narrow bar with a spiral knop at each end of the bar. The outer edge is decorated with a palmette or other foiliate design, rather like a fleur-de-lis, with three fronds projecting from a narrow waist, and four scroll ends exten…

Copper-alloy buckle with gilded integral plate. The frame is circular internally and rather irregular and battered externally, perhaps with its outer edge externally worn. The plate tapers to a narrow projection which is probably a distorted hook. It has two separate copper-alloy knob-headed rivets and a pin hole in which a copper-alloy pin survives. The plate is decorated with a short rectangular panel of zig-zag rocker-arm engraving, through which one of the rivet holes passes. Beyond this, towards the hook, there is a panel with narrowly bevelled edges, then a slightly wider termina…

The two hinge loops thus formed are broken through and have been bent under the rest of the sheet, so any underplate is missing. The surviving part has two rivet holes, one in either corner of the attachment end (the opposite end to the pin slot), blocked with what may be iron corrosion. Small copper-alloy single loop trapezoidal buckle frame. All edges are chunky but corroded. The bar is narrower but not offset; the longer outside edge is angled inwards towards a central rounded moulding with a central slight groove for a pin rest. The reverse is flatter. Width 18mm, length 12 mm, thickness 2 mm, weight 1.32g. Trapezoidal buckles appear to start in the 14th century; this one, with a central moulding, has similarities to strap-slides with central mouldings and pairs of internal projections (e.g. Egan and Pritchard 1991, 1260-1261). AD 1350-1500.
