Finger ring dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, made from silver or another white metal with enamelled decoration. Although now incomplete and bent, it was clearly originally very small and quite flimsy. The hoop is missing a small part at its narrowest part, where it is 2.5mm wide and nor more than 0.8mm thick; the breaks appear fairly fresh. The hoop then flares gently in width to the shoulders, which expand and flatten to form a flat shield-shaped bezel. This is decorated with a shield of arms comprising three diagonal cells part-filled with decayed enamel, with an&…

An incomplete medieval gem-set silver gilt 'stirrup' finger ring. The hoop is undecorated, with a plano-convex or D-shaped cross section, and although now broken would have had an internal diameter of approximately 17mm when intact. The bezel is pointed and triangular, 4.6mm high, with a  single setting for a (now lost) oval gemstone measuring 3mm in length and 2.2mm wide. The smooth shoulders of the bezel merge into the hoop. There are no marks or inscriptions.

The object is broadly oval in plan and D-shaped in cross section at its narrowest point opposite the bezel and widens and thickens, becoming lentoid in cross-section at the bezel. The ring's band is plain and undecorated. The bezel retains an oval setting, centrally located with an engraved intaglio of orange stone or glass. The intaglio is engraved with the helmeted figure of Mars Gravidus, advancing left and carrying a transverse spear and trophy. This finger ring…

Description of the find About half of a finger ring with a flat elongated oval bezel and the remains of plain loop tapering away from the bezel. The bezel is decorated with a crudely scratched motif, probably intended to be a stylized palm branch. Dimensions: internal diameter 17mm; bezel 11mm (long) by 6mm (wide); weight 1.7g. Evidence of Date Good parallels for silver finger rings of this form, with better executed incised stylized palm branch motifs, can be found in the Roman period, second to third century AD. Cf. A complete cast silver Roman ring with an oval cornelian in the bezel c. 3rd century AD. The loop has prominent angles/keels, above are triangular shoulders. The ring aperture is slightly ovoid, with a ‘D’ shaped profile. The oval cornelian sits within a broadly octagonal bezel (17.8mm x 15mm). The charioteer is driving a biga (a two-horse chariot) to the left, and is more unusual, depicting Cupid rather than the more commonly found Victory variation. The representation of the charioteer is naively chip carved, characterised by the Maaskant-Kleibrink as ‘i…

Description: Gilded silver finger-ring of 'iconographic' type, with clasped hands on the hoop. It is a fairly large ring, with the hoop generally of D-shaped cross-section. The gilding survives very well on both interior and exterior, with just a few areas (mainly around the edges) worn to show the underlying silver. The bezel is roughly triangular in cross-section, and is divided into two longitudinal concave fields with a central ridge. Each field is decorated with a crudely engraved human figure in three-quarter pose looking slightly towards the central ridge. They see…

A complete silver-gilt posy ring of 17th or early 18th century date. The ring is heavy D-shaped sectioned hoop with a plain outer surface. The 2.5mm thick hoop is solid silver and was originally gilded. The gilding has largely worn off, particularly on the outer surface. The band shows a transverse line likely indicating that the hoop was created by bending a strip of silver and joining the ends with silver solder. The inside of the hoop is engraved with the italic inscription Keepe faith till death. This was likely inscribed on the strip prior to bending into a hoop. The ring bears no…

A fragment of a late medieval silver ring. The bezel is incomplete but appears to have been flat and lozenge shaped, bearing a panel of incised decoration, possibly comprising a saltire cross on a field of cross hatched lines within a linear border. The hoop has a triangular crossed section (2.1mm thick) and meets the bezel at a stepped shoulder with a flat chevron-shaped collar decorated with a band of parallel incised dashes, arranged in line with the hoop. The inside surface of the ring is flat. There are no maker's marks.

Description: Silver snake's head terminal from a Roman penannular finger-ring. It is oval and plano-convex, with the decoration all on one face; the reverse is undecorated and slightly curved to fit around the finger. The design of the snake's head has probably been stamped into the silver (or into a mould for casting the silver), as there is a narrow undecorated rim along part of one edge where the die has been applied off centre. The rest of the edge is formed from a beaded border to the head. Within this border is a solid domed area with unclear lengthways ri…

Silver strip, probably a finger-ring, now in two pieces (broken during discovery). It is bent out of shape but appears to originally have been circular, with half of the circle surviving (c. 20mm in original diameter). The strip has a consistent width of 4.5mm to 5mm (perhaps depending on how worn the edges are) and is a low D-shape in cross-section, 1.0mm thick. There is no decoration on either the convex exterior or the flat interior.
