A rim sherd from a highly fired coarse ware vessel of possible Roman date (AD 43-410). The wheel-thrown vessel appears to part of a jar and has a flat everted rim. The fabric is very hard and tempering consists of sparsely distributed pieces of coarse rounded whitish quartz or sand together with tiny pieces of rounded and angular sand. The surface has been burnished and has a slight purplish hue. There are ‘wipe-marks’ on the inner face. The sherd represents 21% of the rim and the outer diameter of the rim, when complete, would have been about 14.0cm. 89.1 x 35.3mm. Weight…

A body sherd of Roman Black Burnished Ware (AD 43 – AD 410). The sherd is from the upper part of a vessel, probably close to the rim as the top edge is slightly everted. The fabric is dark grey (almost black) and appears to have been burnished on both faces. It is sparsely distributed with small rounded translucent quartz, rounded white stone (possibly flint) and sparse black iron ore and sparse mica inclusions. Pottery of this type was produced in the Wareham/Poole Harbour region between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. It can be estimated from the curvature of the sherd that…

A rim sherd of a Vectis Ware vessel of Roman date (c. AD 43 – c. AD 150). Length: 60.1mm; width: 38.0mm and 9.4mm thick. Weight: 27.89g.
