Object type: WIRE
Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published
A piece of gold wire made from four strands twisted.
The wire was made from 4 smaller wires (diameter c. 2.4 mm) twisted together in a clockwise spiral giving an overall diameter for the twisted wire of 5 mm. The wire piece weighs 7.24g and is 20mm long (unstraightened). The fragment appears to have been cut from a larger piece of wire at one end, although the other end appears to be a break. Object type: VOTIVE MODEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Published
A small, slender, sub-triangular piece of gold sheet, probably a Roman votive plaque.
The two long converging sides appear to have complete edges; the pointed tip is bent; and the base appears to be a broken edge. Four parallel and equally-spaced crease lines running at right angles to the long axis indicate that the object was probably folded and compressed and has, perhaps, recently been 'unfolded'.
Despite the surface irregularities caused by the folding and unfolding processes an incised/ repoussé design is visible. It comprises a central rib with angled veining on either si…

Roman gem-set gold ornament, possibly part of a composite brooch.
The oval gold box setting, its upper edge lightly rubbed over the edge of the gem, has vertical sides and a flat base, with large oval central aperture revealing the flat back of the gem. A filigree beaded wire arcaded design runs round the side of the setting with an encircling filigree beaded wire at the base. Gold foliate accessory. It is made of fine pieces of gold, is broken in places and is therefore very delicate. Within a small circular recess to the front and bottom of this piece is green enamel. The presence of four loops at the corners suggests that it may have been sewn onto fabrics, though it was more than likely part of a necklace or bracelet. It is in the style of 19th-century revivalist jewellery and therefore is not classed as Treasure.
