A gold finger-ring with turquoise enamel bezel. The exterior of the band is decorated with seven smaller oval turquoise enamel settings, spaced at regular intervals. Between each of these settings the band narrows and expands to form a collared effect. On the reverse of the setting are series of lines radiating from the centre to create a scalloped appearance. Discussion: After discussions with colleagues at the British Museum, it is our view that the decoration on this ring indicates that is likely to date from the mid to late-Georgian period. It is broadly similar to rings in th…

This gold object is the left half of a partial denture. Brian Williams from the British Dental Association Museum advises that 'it would appear to have fractured in the mid-line so originally there may have been more gold, of a similar size/shape, on the right side making the complete structure horse-shoe shaped. Judging by the surface shapes (circles) we think the structure is cast gold and dental casting didn't become available until the early 1900's. To mask the gold, much of the surface would have been covered in Vucanite (a hardened rubber material) made by the Goodyear Rubber Co…

A modern gold pendant. The object consists of two gold discs with pressed images, replicating probably (the details have not pressed through clearly) coin obverses (i.e. the bust side only repeated to make two halves) of the emperor Maximian (AD 286-310), with a gold disc between and a beaded rim. Such mouldings in thin gold or silver foil taken from a coin 'host' are often termed clichés and were a technique known in antiquity to produce forgeries as well as a similar technique for 'bracteate' jewellery popular in Barbaricum (beyond the Roman frontier). Although both coins and br…

Two wide, rectangular-sectioned ovoid loops, interlinked and affixed at one end by a truncated bar. Each loop is decorated with applied twisted gold wires forming a running lozenge pattern with loops at the borders, interspersed with tiny globular gold beads. Of unknown function - perhaps part of an earring or decoration for a hair pin. Stylistically, however, it is consistent with late 19th century jewellery of archaising design.

An undiagnostic rod of twisted gold formed from at least two strands of uniform thickness, bent into an elliptical, penannular shape . Both terminals are spatulate, having been roughly flattened. The makers mark LJ Co is stamped on one terminal. Wear visible on upper face of outer surface. The object is probably a bracelet. XRF analysis of the surface indicates that it is gold alloy close to 9 carat gold. The Hackney Hoard The 80 coins are all gold 20-dollar pieces (so-called 'double eagles') of the United States, issued between 1854 and 1913. The coins are thus all the same denomination, introduced in this form in 1850, and were struck to the same standard, 90% gold, used from 1837 until the end of US gold coinage in 1933. The catalogue shows that the coins gradually increase in number across the decades from 1870 to 1909 (13 coins from 1870-9; 14 from 1880-89; 18 from 1890-99; and 25 from 1900-9).
