A medieval gold noble of Henry V (1413-22), Class E/F mule (North 1373/1374), initial mark: pierced cross, mint: London. Ref: North 1991: p.69; Woodhead 1996: esp. pl. 25 no. 255.
Marks on the coin: obverse - cinquefoil and annulet by the sword arm, pellet at sword point, trefoil by shield, an unbroken annulet on the side of the ship (Type E), rope 2/1, ornaments 1-1-1. Reverse - trefoil in first quarter, quatrefoil in second quarter (Type F).
Struck on a small flan so some of the legend letters are not completely shown.

Description and identification
The reported object is a cast gold finger ring with stone setting. It has an octagonal hollow bezel tapering upwards to form an oval aperture for the stone. Inside the bezel are the remains of a dark red cabochon stone, now sunken. The band is flat, plain and slightly D-shaped in cross section. There is a small panel on each shoulder, decorated with a series of horizontal chased grooves. The band is misshapen, and the back of the bezel is plain and flat.

Description: A fragment from a medieval gold finger ring consisting only of the bezel and the stone it held. The biconical bezel is oval in plan, hexagonal in cross section and hollow. On the lower edges of the long sides there are the remains of the attachment between the bezel and hoop surviving as trapezoidal projections. To the side of one of these, the frame is cracked and broken missing small fragments of its plate. At top of the bezel is an oval hole leaving space for a cabochon purple gemstone. This is free of the bezel after it was cleaned by the finder.

The finger-ring is in a poor condition: missing its central inset, the bezel has been damaged and the loop is slightly squashed, probably as the result of plough damage. Description: A small gold ingot/hack gold ingot, of possible Bronze Age to Early-medieval date. The ingot is roughly sub-rectangular in section and in plan with no clear original edges each being irregular and slightly ragged. One long edge is slightyl bevelled indicating where the item might have been clipped.
Dimensions: The ingot is 12.2mm long, 9.9mm wide, 0.8mm thick and weighs 0.93 grams.

The object is composed of a rectangular cross sectioned band which has been distorted, likely by post-depositional processes. The finger ring is circular with a D-shaped section. The outer surface is decorated with a heart framed by curvilinear vines and leaves acting as a bezel. The hoop is engraved with Jasper Melcior Baltazar in black-letter script. Each name is separated by a short curvilinear vine with leaves. The interior of the hoop is undecorated.

The obverse shows annulets on the cusps of the tressure and a lis in the centre of the reverse suggesting the prototype was a quarter noble of Edward III's Treaty Period, the annulets seen in the 'Transitional Series' of 1361-3 (North 1224), the lis seen in the Treaty Series of 1363-9 (North 1243-4). The bezel has rectangular base that is c.6.4mm long and 5.6mm wide. This has a near vertical 2.5mm high collar that with a slightly in turned upper lip which would have held a stone or gem in place. Description: Large gold finger-ring with internal posy inscription and external decoration. The hoop is of even width throughout, and the exterior has a bold groove around either edge, with a convex surface in between.
