A heavily corroded copper-alloy Roman sestertius, possibly a countermarked coin of Claudius I (AD 41-54), dating to the period c.AD 41-54 (Reece period 2). Probably [SPES AVGVSTA] reverse type depicting Spes walking left holding flower and skirt. Possibly mint of Rome. cf. RIC I (2nd ed.), p. 128, no. 99 passim for the possible type. The large rectangular indentation at the back of the obverse bust might be the remains of a rectangular countermark.
