The matrix has a tri-lobed terminal with a knop at its apex and small projections at the side (one at each upper side of a lobe) and one at each side where it joins the shaft. It sits upon a raised collar of three bands which has a short hexagonal tapering shaft below. This expands to form an oval shaped matrix surface which is engraved with an armorial shield set in a beaded recessed border.
The arms are quartered and are 1st and 4th , on a chevron between three animals's heads erased, a mullet enclosed by two crescents; 2nd and 3rd, two bars.
Above the shield the crest dis…

Late Medieval copper alloy seal matrix, 1300-1400. The matrix has a circular integral suspension loop above a hexagonal-sectioned shaft which widens out to accomodate a circular matrix. The engraving is crude, but the central motif probably shows two crossed arms with a probable bird motif above. A beaded circle separates this from the outer inscription, which reads * I VAS A MAN (I was a man).
Compare IOW-F73E63, which notes 'Irene Szymanski has commented on this seal matrix: 'a pair of crossed gloves or hands, with a rope tying them together at the wrist (barely visible) and a sm…

Medieval lead alloy seal matrix, Length 32mm, width 24mm, weight 20.23g.
The object is incomplete, having a partial lentoid form. It has an odd triangular cross-section, 2mm-7mm, suggesting it is possibly mis-cast. The matrix surface has the inscription set between grooved pointed-oval borders, suggesting that it was intended to be pointed-oval in shape, but there is now a variable space outside the outer border, perhaps due to poor standards of manufacture or perhaps due to later breakage.
The central motif is geometric, consisting of an incised vertical line with an outward-po…

Medieval lead seal matrix, 35mm in diameter and 2mm thick with a weight of 15.02g. The seal is circular in form and flat with a small rectangular projection, suggesting a broken suspension loop. Four arms of the star end in terminals like ears of wheat, and the other four are simply tapered. Medieval silver seal matrix. The object has a trilobed terminal which joins a hexagonal section shaft. The shaft widens to contain a circular matrix. This is formed of a central motif with inscription S'ARAZENTE. The motif has a solid circular border which contains a six pointed, star like, border with Gothic trilobed decoration in the spaces formed between the two borders. Medieval lead alloy seal matrix, 39mm long, 25mm wide and 4mm thick, with a weight of 22.6grams. The seal matrix is lentoid (pointed oval) in form and rectangular in section. It bears the inscription in clearly engraved letters + SIGILLVM ROBERTI DMSLN which surrounds an image of the Agnus Dei (lamb of God) carrying a banner.
The first part of the inscription is easy to interpret - Seal of Robert. The final five letters are much harder. The L is inverted and the N reverse-barred. There are no abbreviation marks, but the D may stand for de; one would then expect a place-name to follow.

The matrix is circular in form and sub triangular in section with a fluted hexagonal shaft, now incomplete. The seal is formed of a beaded border containing a hand, with a possible ruffed sleeve, holding a three flowered stem. The shape and the design suggest it is probably 17th century in date.

Vesica-shaped medieval lead seal matrix. Very simple vesica form with no trace of suspension lug or loop. The object is in fair condition, is 29mm long, 23mm wide, 6mm thick and weighs 22.50g.
Central motif: fleur-de-lis. Legend: + S: GALFRIDI: DCNI: (Seal of Geoffrey the Dean) within an inner and outer grooved border. The N may alternatively be an M, although this makes reading the seal difficult. Other seals of deans are known: NMS-2A9186 and BERK-84C6C7, although here the inscription DECANI is written out in full.
Likely to be 13th-century in date.
