This coin is very base and is possibly an irregular (plated?) copy rather than a base silver issue. Prototype of the Mint of Laodicea ad Mare. cf. RIC IV.1, p. 163, no. 526. VENER[I] VICT reverse type depicting Venus, draped, standing left, raising up right hand holding apple and holding sceptre in left hand. Eastern Mint (Emesa or Laodicea). RIC IV.1, p. 176, nos. 630-631 The coin has a diameter of 17.6mm, Thickness 2.3mm and Weight 2.00g. When found it was encrusted with a hard, black, tar-like substance.

Silver denarius of Septimius Severus (AD 193-211), dating to AD 195-6 (Reece Period 10), BON EVENT, Bonus Eventus standing left holding basket of fruit and corn ears. Eastern Mint. RIC IV, pt 2, p. 154, no. 467. RIC (written in 1936) gives a specific mint attribution to Laodicea, but this is now not commonly acknowledged. This is a good example of a scarce coin.
