A fragment of a late Roman copper-alloy openwork belt fitting (c. 375-c. 409). This fragment is part of the frame and the rear face is partially obscured by a deposit of corroded iron. The frame is flat on both faces. Prior to being broken this surviving part was in the form of an openwork lozenge containing a square centre-piece with rounded corners which is held by arms extending from the inner corners of the lozenge. The centre-piece has four evenly spaced circular openings. The copper-alloy part has a green patina and the iron is reddish brown and corroded. Height: 21.9mm…

An incomplete cast copper alloy sword belt fitting of post-Medieval date (c 1500-c.1650). The cast-in-one object consists of a rectangular part with an open centre and a circular integral suspension loop on one of the longer sides of the rectangular part. One end is incomplete but would probably have been in the form of a plate with a circular opening with curvilinear edges. The surviving part of this element has a circular rivet hole, 2.3mm in diameter. The rivet is missing, although, there is iron staining around the hole. The rectangular part is 18.5mm in length and 13.0mm in…

An incomplete cast copper alloy hooked strap fitting of probable post-Medieval date (1500-1700). When complete the fitting would have been sub-triangular in plan. It is sub-rectangular in cross-section, but the hook part is sub-oval in cross section. At the incomplete end it would have had openwork in the shape of a heart or trefoil. Below this part there are two knops extending outwards horizontally. These are divided by a central rivet hole that contains the remains of a corroded iron rivet.
