The find consists of a rough, cylindrical ingot with rounded ends and hammered surfaces; length, 38.1 mm; width, 12.4 mm; weight 30.58 g. It does not conform to the usual shape of either Roman or Early Medieval ingots and has no distinguishing features. It is therefore undiagnostic and undatable, so does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. We recommend that the Secretary of State should disclaim the Crown's interest in this find and should be grateful if the Coroner would authorise its return.

Description: Finger-ring in the form of a single band, a flat strip of gold which varies in width from 2.1mm at the back of the hoop to 4.1mm at the front. The hoop is rectangular in cross-section and 0.5-0.6mm in thickness; the exterior is not smoothly curved, but is faceted, with slight but deliberate roughly square facets on the sides of the ring. The front of the hoop is less regularly faceted. The width of the hoop narrows towards the underside. A lead throwing die of unknown date. The die is cuboid in shape, with six sides. The holes have been drilled and the sides have been organised in the standard 'seven' system, where the total of the holes on opposing sides add up to seven. 1 is opposite 6, 2 opposite 5 and 3 opposite 4. Dice are frequently found and can be of any date from the Roman period through to the Post Medieval period (AD 43 to AD 1700). A copper-alloy and iron object, possibly a furniture fitting of uncertain date. The fitting is in the shape of an eagle's head and is rendered in three dimensions. Nostrils on the beak, the eyes and feathers are moulded but also emphasised with incised decoration. There is a piercing in the top of the head, rendering the eagle's head hollow. An incomplete hammered gold object of uncertain function and date. The object is rectangular in plan and octagonal in section. One end is flattened to a more rectangular section. A cast copper alloy figurine of a seated dog or fox. The animal has a long snout and pointed ears. No detail is visible with the exception of a line to show the mouth but the surface is pitted. The line on one of the front legs is probably damage. The legs are rather roughly moulded with no joints shown. There is a scar where the tail has broken off. There are four other dog figurines on the database, all of differing styles ( see IOW-B354E4 from the Isle of Wight; SF8669 from Suffolk; HAMP2995 and HAMP3508 both from Hampshire).
