A copper-alloy finger ring dating to the fifteenth century AD. The finger ring possesses an oval band which is hemispherical in section. The band expands to form widened shoulders supporting an integral, flat, oval engraved bezel. The bezel is decorated with a hexagonal incised border within which there is a stylised incised 'W' surmounted by a crown. The ring measures 16mm across the bezel by 12mm wide, the bezel is 5mm thick and the band 3mm thick by 3mm wide. The ring has a maximum internal diameter of 26mm. It weighs 11.56g.

A copper-alloy 'stirrup'-shaped finger-ring dating to the twelfth to fifteenth century AD.
The hoop is slender and D-shaped in section and is broken. It rises to a pronounced bezel with an oval setting for a stone. The setting is empty, except for the remains of adhesive or solder. The depressions in this substance suggest there were two circular stones set in the bezel. This ring is similar to examples from London (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 326, refs: 1608, 1609). It appears that this form was popular from the mid-12th to the mid-15th century. However, they were most popular during…

A Late Roman copper-alloy finger ring.
The ring survives in good condition, retaining its original shape and having little wear or corrosion; the inset is, however, missing. The hoop is of D-shaped section and of equal width and thickness throughout. Each shoulder comprises a U-shaped moulding, from the cleft of which the narrower hoop emerges. The oval bezel is largely occupied by a cell of the same shape, the base of which has been scratched (probably deliberate 'keying') and bears possible traces of a white metal coating.

An incomplete copper-alloy finger ring, dating from the Early Roman period.
The bezel is flat, oval in plan and has an uneven surface that suggests there may once have been an attached element. The smooth taper from the bezel means that the shoulders and hoop, both of which are of D-shaped cross section, are indistinguishable from one another. The back of the hoop has been lost in antiquity.
Width: 23.4mm; depth/length: 17.4mm; bezel width (transverse): 13.9mm. Weight: 7.73g.

Part of a Roman copper-alloy finger ring with glass inset.
The raised setting, sub-circular in plan, contains a translucent bluish-green inset with convex surface. The shoulders are of angular appearance, their widest points being at their inner ends, from which they taper. Nothing remains of the hoop. The area around the setting is heavily encrusted.
Width: 17.2mm; depth/length: 8.9mm; width of bezel (transverse): 7.3mm. Weight: 1.11g.
The form of this ring, with its angular shoulders, is typical of finger rings of the 3rd century AD (see Johns 1996: 48-49). Another ring wit…

Fragment of a gold finger-ring, comprising the bezel and part of the hoop. The bezel is oval-shaped with the remains of an integral hoop at each end: approximately 3mm at one and 8mm at the other. The surviving portion shows that the hoop originally tapered inwards, the narrowest surviving point being about 2mm. It is flat in cross-section.
The front of the bezel is decorated with an applied design executed in gold granulation and beaded wire filigree. The beaded wire is much worn, with the individual beads now difficult to discern. The individual gold granules vary in size and s…

A gold finger ring with distorted hoop of 'D-shaped' section, widening from the back to the bezel. Each shoulder is decorated by a series of longitudinal grooves, and there is a grooved central ridge which, at the non-bezel end, terminates in a fork with projecting, tapering groove. The box bezel is now empty, the sides flaring towards the open top. Each of the setting's two longer faces has a line of sub-oval perforations, now worn thin, which would once have contained enamel.

An incomplete silver finger ring. The remaining hoop has a triangular section and is of equal width and thickness throughout. Both of the outer surfaces bear an inscription, executed in Lombardic lettering. One side reads ']SVS : NAZ '; the other side's inscription, at 180 degrees to the first, is ']ENVS : RE['. A Roman copper-alloy finger ring.
The object has been made by cutting off the end of a penannular type bracelet and rolling it to form a subcircular finger ring. The ring is of flat section, its straight sides converging towards the cut end. A stamped flower head design, which comprises five pointed-oval petals around a central ring, decorates the upper surface of the bracelet terminal. Unlike the rest of the ring, which is curved, this end has been left flat, possibly in an attempt to create a bezel-like feature. A decorative band of alternating grooves and ridges (the outer two n…

A badly distorted Roman copper-alloy finger ring.
This is an example of a 'snake-form' penannular finger ring. The hoop is of rectangular section, flaring into a pair of inward-facing snake heads. Both heads have a near-right-angled bend, which is a deliberate feature. There are possible traces of incised facial features.
Width: 28.9mm; maximum height (terminals): 13.5mm; weight: 2.37g.
Snake-form jewellery appears to have been introduced into Britain in the 1st century AD and continued to be used throughout much of the Roman period (Johns 1996: 44). A close parallel for this…

A Roman copper-alloy finger ring of Henig Type XI. .
Unlike the smooth, circular inner surface, the outer surface of the ring is faceted, with eight flattened panels. The band is of equal height throughout most of the circumference, but there is a gradual narrowing at one point, possibly the back. The surfaces display no evidence of decoration or coating.
Diameter: 19.2mm; width of band: 4.2mm; thickness: 1.4mm; weight: 1.9g.
A similar finger ring, of suggested 4th century date, was found in excavations in Colchester (Crummy 1983: 49/fig. 52, no. 1788).

A complete silver medieval finger ring dating from the fifteenth century. The ring is formed from a single sheet of silver which has been bent into shape and the edges soldered together. Silver finger ring, traces of gilding. Plain band ring with a slender hoop rising to a pointed bezel, plain mount with a small oval blue stone setting (glass or sapphire), damaged. This is a 'stirrup ring' of medieval date: examples have been widely recorded in copper alloy, silver and gold, frequently with blue stone settings. A fragment of a silver finger ring, comprising the bezel and much of the flanking shoulders. The ring is of rectangular section, its widest point being at the bezel, the flat surface of which bears an incised palm branch motif, aligned longitudinally. The bezel extends smoothly into the tapering shoulders, which are undecorated.
Discussion:
Ralph Jackson dates a similar ring from Cottered, Hertfordshire, to the 1st to 3rd century AD, based on comparison with two similar examples in the British Museum collection (TAR 2005/6: 60, Treasure case 2006 T418). In reference to the palm …

Roman silver finger-ring, ovoid setting, the original inset (probably an intaglio) now missing. The hoop is broken and has been deliberately bent around and pushed up inside the bezel. The narrow hoop is of rectangular section and expands and swells slightly to triangular shoulders. The bezel has a slight recess on its inner side to accommodate the setting. The surface of the ring is heavily pitted, possibly due to recent cleaning.

A copper-alloy finger ring of Late Roman date.
The ring has been cast in one piece and has a flat-sectioned hoop, the width of which gradually expands towards the shoulders. A pair of transverse grooves separates the shoulders from the wider, slightly raised, rectangular bezel. Each shoulder bears an incised saltire; a saltire also occupies most of the surface of the bezel, with an additional right-angled groove added to each end of one of the arms.
