An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman buckle of Hawkes and Dunning type 1B dating AD 350-450. The buckle frame is D-shape in both form and cross-section with bevelled inner and outer edges. It is decorated with transverse ridged collars and punched ring and dot eyes to depict a pair of confronting dolphins but is very worn. Extending from the crests of the dolphins are the remains of two outwardly facing horse heads. Only the elongated lower portions of their necks survive, both of which are broken and worn. An incomplete copper-alloy buckle frame dating to the thirteenth or fourteenth century AD. The buckle frame is of single-looped oval type with a narrowed and offset strap bar and an ornate outer edge. The ornate outer edge comprises four moulded oval knops with a pronounced central groove which acts as a rest for the pin. The pin is missing. The buckle frame measures 18mm in length, 24mm in width and 2mm in thickness. A similar example is illustrated in Whitehead p.22, no.97.
