FIND OF COINS, RHOS-ON-SEA (Wales 11.03) On 2 February 2011, Mr XXX reported to the Portable Antiquities Scheme (Peter Reavill, Finds Liaison Officer for Herefordshire and Shropshire) the finding of two coins on the foreshore at Rhos-on-Sea, Conwy. The coins, provisionally identified by the undersigned on the basis of scanned images, were transferred to Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales, for formal identification and a report to H.M. An axe-hammer of igneous stone found in 1989 holding open the door of a shed in the rear garden of a house at Castle Place, Abergele. The finder Mr Nathan Roberts was undertaking renovation work on the house at the time. A fine example with overall pecking marks visible, blunted at the axe end, signs of damage at the butt end. One of the perforated sides is slightly concave. Shaft hole is towards the butt end, and is splayed at both ends suggesting that it was drilled from both sides (Spencer, J, pers comm, 2004). The axe is complete, although the blade edge has been lost and the axe has an overall length of 87.6mm and weighs 129.2g. The mouth is oval with an external width of 35.7mm and an external thickness of 33.2mm (internal - 27.8mm x 24.7mm). In a generally corroded condition and incomplete. The unusual feature of this particular example is the rectangular or square head plate from which the circular trumpet head emanates. The head plate is incomplete but is assumed to have supported an integral head loop. At the back of the trumpet mouth are the corroded remains of what appears to be a hinge mechanism. Near complete copper alloy matrix. The matrix is pointed oval in shape and is flat with a pierced lug stemming from a raised central tapered rib. The seal matrix is of an ecclesiastical type. The central motif depicts the Virgin Mary with child at the apex, above a double towered church front with a finial either side of the tower. The base of the motif depicts a kneeling cleric. An incomplete Roman brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Group 4.a-b, flat wing ends type). The axial rod is intact and the pierced top of the pin through which the rod passes, to create a hinge, is present but the majority of the pin is missing.
