A complete copper alloy ram-rod of modern date (AD 1800-1900). The object is complete with no indication of breaks and is composed of a single, solid piece of metal which has possibly been machine worked to achieve its shape. The upper end is bell shaped and tapers towards the integral shaft, this is circular in section and has a single raised, circumferentially running aspect located approximately half way along the shaft. The terminating end of the object and shaft is slightly broadened due to the percussive nature of the use of the object. Given the length of the object it is li…

Broad period: MODERN
County: Denbighshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
An incomplete military badge dating to the end of the 19th century (c1830-1870). The badge is manufactured from pressed sheet metal and depicts a bugle badge. It is possible that the central part of the badge would originally have had a motif that would link it to a specific regiment - this is now missing. The rear of the badge has lost its integral slider clip that would have been used to attach it to a cap. However, two loops and a crude pin have been added, possible in order for the badge to be re-used. The outer surface is heavily pitted although there are some faint traces of the…

Clay tobacco pipe which dates from c1860-1910 and is decorated with a common decorative scheme for the period comprising moulded milling around the rim and the initials RAOB above a buffalo's head on the front of the bowl. These initials are for the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, a fraternal order founded in 1822 and one of the largest such organisations in the United Kingdom. Pipes like this were (and still are) used in ceremonies by the organisation but were also decorative items that found a regular place in the market. The design was produced by many manufacturers as on…

Post medieval silver(?) thimble made from sheet with turned over edge and slight dome. There are no decorative or other features to help date this object and the shape suggests a late date, post 1707, and that this may be a liner for a now missing thimble, possibly 19th Century. The find dates to later than 1707 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Dr Dora Thornton, Curator of Renaissance Collections The British Museum

The rim runs round the complete end, which has a tiny circular perforation at the two angles. Neither the function of nor any close parallel for the object has been identified.
