Circular lead fabric weight of unusually elaborate design. There is a circular recess on one face, within which are two circular holes that pierce through the disc; these holes are separated by a raised line tapering at one end. The weight is stamped with a ribbed border around the edge of the circular recess. Despite looking like a button, these weights were and are used to weigh down the hems of curtains, and perhaps also skirts. Examples can be seen on page 83 of Bailey's (2004) Buttons and Fasteners. Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MODERN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast silver finger ring, circular hoop with incised cross decoration and two opposing snake heads on the bezel. Discussion: although snake head rings are known in the Roman period, this particular ring is modern and probably made in the last 200 years. Conclusion: although this object is composed of more than 10% precious metal it is not more than 300 years old and so does not qualify as treasure as stipulated in the Treasure Act 1996.

Broad period: MODERN
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy object, 21mm long, 12mm wide and 4mm thick with a weight of 9.45g. The object has a square head with each corner cut off, creating a facetted appearance. This sits on top of a circular-sectioned shaft. Although the object resembles a Roman pin (fig.9. no.11 in Cool, H.E.M. Roman metal hairpins from Southern Britain. Vol 147 Archaeological Journal 1990) it is more likely to be a modern hook, perhaps for a coat or strings for a blind, etc. Compare NLM-B5DF46, LVPL-4CF45C, LEIC-B30068, SF-D59BA6. Probably 19th or 20th century.

It does not therefore qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. B.M. Ager Curator Department of Bri…

This gold object is the left half of a partial denture. Brian Williams from the British Dental Association Museum advises that 'it would appear to have fractured in the mid-line so originally there may have been more gold, of a similar size/shape, on the right side making the complete structure horse-shoe shaped. Judging by the surface shapes (circles) we think the structure is cast gold and dental casting didn't become available until the early 1900's. To mask the gold, much of the surface would have been covered in Vucanite (a hardened rubber material) made by the Goodyear Rubber Co…

Reverse image: Providentia standing left, holding a baton and a cornucopiae, globe at foot. Mint unclear - it migh be S P // (ML?) for London, but this type is very rare for London. It is more likely to be S P // (C) for C Mint which is much more common (cf RIC V, pt 2, p. 561, no. 35). The thickness and cast nature of the coin, indicate that this is a forgery and not contemporary to the Roman period. This coin has been included in …
