A probably Post Medieval silver, sheet metal ornament or toy in the form of an owl. The object is made from two pieces of sheet silver, one depicting the front of the owl and its perch, and the other depicting the folded wings on the back. The two pieces are sandwiched together, though they have become separated at the top. There is no evidence of further elements or attachment, though it is possible another piece of metal was held between the decorated ones at the head end. The object appears to be complete, leaving its function a mystery. Michael Lewis (British Museum) suggests that…

An incomplete lead-alloy modern toy or souvenir in the shape of a throne. It is a copy of the Coronation Chair in Westminster Abbey, which was commissioned by Edward I to contain the Stone of Scone; the toy has moulded decoration including lions at the base of the throne's legs and quartefoil and arched decoration on the sides. The back of the throne does not have any decoration, suggesting that it was intended to rest against something, so not to be seen. Although the Coronation Chair was commissioned during the rule of Edward I (AD 1279-1307), this toy dates to the modern period,…

Cast lead owl standing 52mm high, probably dating to the 18/19th centuries. It is solid and has detail on both faces. The owl is depicted with large eyes, a hooked beak, pointed ears and detail on the wing, breast and tail being picked out. It appears to have been attached to something as there is a broken base, measuring 12mm in diameter, at the end of the feet. Geoff Egan has said 'It is possible that it is part of the series of 'shy' toys, like a shy cock, set up to be knocked down by having sticks thrown at it'. If this is so the owl would have been on a larger base to enable it…
