A nearly complete cast copper-alloy Modern zoomorphic figurine of an owl in the style of a Greek or Roman figurine, probably 19th-20th century in date. The owl is formed of an oval sectioned head and a pyriform in plan and sub-triangular tapering body with an indication of clawed feet attaching the figurine to a small triangular straight-sided plinth. The owl is embellished by means of two incised ring-and-dot eyes; one of which retains a vivid bright blue enamel with both eyes retaining an orange encrustation possibly the remains of further enamel in those areas. The bird is facing r…

A figure of a knight represented in a long belted surcoat and wearing a helmet. In both hands he carries what appears to be a mace, which is held close to his left cheek. Stippling around the neckline is probably intended to represent mail. On the reverse the figure is almost entirely flat, apart from a shallow groove in the centre, which retains the remains of two points of attachment. Scientific analysis has demonstrated that the figure is made of a cheap metal-alloy commonly used in the production of toys which has been coated to resemble oxidised silver. Furthermore, soil has be…

Lead. Solid-cast figurine, with slight mould-lines apparent down both sides of body. Representing a pugilist wearing shorts and a prize belt, with right leg advanced; the treatment of hair may suggest a black African is represented. Traces of dark paint survive around neck and shoulders. Similar, but not identical to, a find from the Isle of Wight, no. 414 in the Portable Antiquities and Treasure Annual Report (for) 2007, page 162, representing the African-American former slave Tom Molineaux (1784-1818), whose English prize-fighting career reached a peak in 1809-10. Length/height: 99.…

Copper alloy Nelson figurine, probably dating to the Victorian period. The figurine is very worn but has the characteristic coat and hat of Nelson; it has a fairly flat circular base which looks as though it may have been attached to something else. During the Victorian period, themed bottle stoppers, letter-opening knives and magnifying glasses made from pewter became very popular in Britain, when enthusiasts often built up large collections. This example may have been attached to one such household item. The figurine weighs 54.9g and measures 58.4mm in length, 20mm in width and 18.3…
