Object type: PIPE (SMOKING)
Broad period: MODERN
County: Cheshire West and Chester
Workflow stage: Published
A mould-decorated spurless clay tobacco pipe bowl dating from c1860-1910 with raised beaded seams to the bowl. The primary motif on the left hand side of the bowl is a harp while that on the right is a large three lobed leaf, probably intended to represent a shamrock. The large influx of Irish migrants to Britain, particularly as a result of the potato famine of the 1840s onwards, led to a demand for Irish style pipes, of which this is an example. Although a few pipes were imported from Ireland itself, the majority were made by British makers to cater for the demand. A pipe bowl of th…

Object type: DENTAL IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MODERN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published
This gold object is the left half of a partial denture. Brian Williams from the British Dental Association Museum advises that 'it would appear to have fractured in the mid-line so originally there may have been more gold, of a similar size/shape, on the right side making the complete structure horse-shoe shaped. Judging by the surface shapes (circles) we think the structure is cast gold and dental casting didn't become available until the early 1900's. To mask the gold, much of the surface would have been covered in Vucanite (a hardened rubber material) made by the Goodyear Rubber Co…

An undiagnostic rod of twisted gold formed from at least two strands of uniform thickness, bent into an elliptical, penannular shape . Both terminals are spatulate, having been roughly flattened. The makers mark LJ Co is stamped on one terminal. Wear visible on upper face of outer surface. The object is probably a bracelet. XRF analysis of the surface indicates that it is gold alloy close to 9 carat gold.

Workflow stage: Published
A silver finger ring in the form of a strap or miniature belt. It has fractured across the band at one point, no gilding is evident. The hoop, which has a fracture across it, has a band width of 6.3mm, an internal diameter of 22.2 x 19mm and weight of 5.844g.
The finger ring has a form typical of a nineteenth century date. The popular form was made by a range of manufacturers, including Spiers (Hart 1978, 133). Cast copper alloy seed drill scoop, dating to the nineteenth or early twentieth century AD. The bowl and a short length of the stem of the object survive. The bowl and stem have been cast in one piece. The bowl is circular and deep. The handle is circular in cross-section and terminates in a break. File marks can be seen down the sides of the handle and on the upper surface are four small oval depressions. It is unclear if these are intentional decoration. The spoon has a dark green patina. Although it bears some resemblance to a Crummy Type 1 Roman spoon, the stem is rather to large …

Hollow sheet metal bracelet, penannular in shape, with spherical terminals. Due to the weight of the bracelet it is highly unlikely that the material of this find is gold.
The date is uncertain but it is not Ancient, post-dating 1707. As the find dates later than 1707, and does not contain the minimum of 10% precious metal necessary to qualify as Treasure, it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

Cast lead owl standing 52mm high, probably dating to the 18/19th centuries. It is solid and has detail on both faces. The owl is depicted with large eyes, a hooked beak, pointed ears and detail on the wing, breast and tail being picked out.
It appears to have been attached to something as there is a broken base, measuring 12mm in diameter, at the end of the feet. Geoff Egan has said 'It is possible that it is part of the series of 'shy' toys, like a shy cock, set up to be knocked down by having sticks thrown at it'. If this is so the owl would have been on a larger base to enable it…
