Rim sherd of an unglazed earthenware pottery vessel dating from the medieval period (1050 – 1350). The sherd is most likely to be from a relatively thick walled cooking pot. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular grit, quartz and pottery (grog) inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour of the sherd is two tone, the centre is a reduced mid buff grey colour, whilst the inner and outer surfaces are mid orange colour. A suggested diameter of the rim is 21cm, however the sherd represen…

Rim sherd of an unglazed earthenware pottery vessel dating from the post medieval period (1500-1650). The sherd is most likely to be from a relatively thin walled jar or storage vessel. The fabric of the sherd is a relatively hard earthenware with a number of small angular and sub-angular, quartz, iron stone and oolitic limestone inclusions. There is also a large amount of mica in the fabric. The fabric colour is a uniform light orange colour. A suggested diameter of the rim is 11cm, however the sherd represents only 6% of the rim and the diameter is therefore an estimate. The height o…

Fired earthenware pottery gaming piece. The date is uncertain due to the unstratified nature of the piece but its date is likely to fall in either the medieval or post medieval periods (1200-1700). The gaming piece is sub-circular in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. It is undecorated but there is a distinct ridge / rim around the upper edge creating a circular recessed centre. The gaming piece measures 19.7mm in diameter, is 7.3mm thick and weighs 3.43 grams. The outer surface is a mid grey black colour and where it has been abraded in the soil a mid orange purple coloured fab…

Large pottery vessel or jar, probably for storage, transportation, and dispensing of liquids (possibly milk or cider). The vessel is formed from a Midlands Purple-ware fabric. The dating of the vessel is difficult due its functional nature; however, the fabric would suggest a post medieval or early modern date (1550-1800). The vessel has been thrown on a wheel and is globular in form with a relatively wide base with evenly expanded side walls which taper to a flared mouth with an everted shaped rim. The rim is broken but the rest of the vessel is complete. To the front face of the …

Rim sherd of a thin walled Severn Valley Ware earthenware dating to the late Roman period (150 – 410 AD). This sherd is worn and probably comes from the rim of either a storage jar or cooking pot. The fabric is relatively soft and slightly powdery with a number of angular and sub angular quartz (white and rose coloured), grit, and brown coloured ironstone inclusions. The fabric colour is a mid buff orange and the outer colour is a lighter mid orange. The diameter of the vessel can be estimated from the curvature of the rim; this is approximately 380mm (38cm). The fabric of the sherds is a very hard earthenware with a number of small rounded and sub-angular grit, quartz, and broken burnt pottery inclusions. Sherd of very worn courseware pottery possibly dating from the Roman period (45-400 AD) or medieval period (1300-1450). The fabric is relatively soft with a number of angular and sub angular quartz, grit, and iron stone inclusions. The fabric also contains considerable inclusions of mica / sand. It is broadly similar to the Severn Valley wares of the Roman period. The fabric colour is a mid orange colour.
