A copper alloy Roman as, probably of Maximis, dating to AD 235-8 (Reece Period 11), PIETAS AVG, Priestly implements. Mint of Rome. RIC IV, pt 2, pp. 155-6, cf. nos. 7b and 12b. The portrait does not have the distinct chin of Maximus, but no asses appear to have been struck of this type for Gordian III as Caesar. It has suffered some damage, parts of the edge of the flan having been chipped away. It is 29.5mm in diameter and 3mm thick. It weighs 9.2gm.

RIC Vol. IV Part II, no.12b. The original record stated dupondius or as, but dupondii of Maximus are very rare and this is quite a light coin (6.18g) for a dupondius.

Probably a sestertius or as of Maximus (235-8), [possibly: PRINCIPI IVVENTVTIS S C, Maximus standing left with standard and baton, two standards to his right, c.f. RIC IV, pt 2, p. 156, cf. nos. 13 and 14a - this is reconstructed from the record below by the National Finds Adviser in Feb 2010, but it is not possible to be certain this is a coin of Maximus; it was originally said to have been a dupondius, but dupondii of Maximus are very rare.

Furthermore, dupondii appear to be incredibly rare for Maximus - there are none in the BM collection.

PIETAS AVG reverse depicting a collection of priestly implements used for sacrifice (lituus, knife, patera, jug, simpulum and sprinkler). Mint of Rome. As RIC IVb p. 156 no. 12b; BMC VI, pp. 239-40, nos. 208-9. The coin is light (2.2g) and does seem to have a 'soapy' appeareance. If a copy / Limesfalsum, it could have been produced in the AD 240s.
