A body sherd of irregular form from a grey earthenware vessel of probable Roman date. Although the fabric and outer surface look Roman, the wheelmarks do not seem consistent with a Roman date.

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A very abraded fragment of dark grey earthenware with abundant small flint and chalk of early-medieval date, Early or Middle Saxon; there has been a considerable amount of early-medieval material from the findspot. The abrasions are especially deep on the dark outer side, with two very deep and wide scratches (which form a V shape) standing out from a carpet of smaller ones. As the abrasions are equally spread over both inside and outside faces it is suggested they occurred naturally since deposition.

An irregularly shaped fragment of coarse grey Roman earthenware. The fabric is sandy and extremely micaceous, with foreign looking inclusions. There is one small area of a red-brown colour where the grey outer coating has been worn away. It is suggested that this is a fragment from an amphora, the distinct type of which is unclear.

A rim sherd of late medieval or early post-medieval brown glazed red earthenware. The sherd is from an open fairly shallow vessel such as a bowl or squat jug. Abrasion has worn away much of the glaze, which once covered both the inside and outside faces, as well as a small fragment from the beaded rim itself. Where the glaze remains, it is somewhat scratched.

Record ID: HAMP-1BB995
Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A large fragment of Roman coarseware, which appears to originate from the side of a large, flat, neutral-shaped dish type vessel, a conclusion which is reached due to the presence on the sherd of both a small amount of rim (although not large enough to estimate a diameter) and a large curve into the base of the object. The fabric is of a light brown colour and is slightly micaceous, although there are a few relatively large inclusions of what seems to be a quartzite temper visible on the inner surface. The outer surface is very abraded with some obvious deep scratches.
