An almost complete medieval silver groat of James IV of Scotland (1488-1513). Light coinage, type IIIe (Spink S5342) dating to the period c.1496-1513. Mint: Edinburgh. The coin is lightly clipped and has some small pieces missing from the edge of the flan. Ref: Spink 2015, pg 51. Measurements: diameter 23.72mm, weight 2.18g

A very corroded and incomplete copper alloy coin which may be Scottish. It seems similar to a half plack of James IV. The reverse (cross side) is illegible but a square topped shield with a pointed base can be seen on the obverse, with traces of a legend round it. The tressure appears to meet at an angle in the cnetre of the top of the shield, which is unlike the half plack design. Another possibility is that the object is an English medieval jetton of Edward I or II, similar to number 8 on plate 2 of Berry, but this jetton has no legend on the side with the shield, though the tressur…
