Minted at ash-Shâsh, with the names of the Samanid amir, the caliph al-Muktafî (289-295 h.) and the vizier Abu l-Husayn Walî ad-dawla. Sylloge Numorum Arabicorum Tübingen XVb no. 239

A Samanid dirham of al-Shash dated possibly 300 AH (AD 912) dating to the reign of amir Ahmad b. Ismail (295-301 AH), tentatively identified by Luke Treadwell of the Ashmolean. This coin was probably brought to England by Viking traders.
