Perforated stone spindle whorl or net weight of unknown date – probably Mesolithic – Modern (6500 BC – 1800 AD). The stone used to make the artefact is a micaceous sandstone which is a mid brown grey colour. The weight is irregular being broadly sub-circular in plan and D shaped in cross section. The central hole is drilled from both ends, is broadly circular in shaped and waisted (egg-timer) in cross section. The maximum diameter of the hole measures 8.4mm. The whorl is not decorated and the surface is rough. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very…

Sedimentary, sandstone, loom weight of unknown date, probably post Roman 800 – 1500 AD. The loom weight is broadly sub rectangular in both plan and profile. It is formed from a relatively hard sandstone. A small broadly rectangular hole has been punched in the upper edge, and it is suggested that this hole allowed the weight to be suspended. Similar weights are associated with loom, although it is possible that this represents a broken (and possibly reused) sandstone roof tile. None of the surfaces have been overly worked and none are smooth or polished. The weight measures 93.6mm…

A probable weight made of chipped stone of the Roman to Modern periods. The stone is discoid with rounds sides and a central perforation. On one fact, a slight inscribed line cross the perforation, perhaps indicating a resting place for a brace or pin related to the shaft or rope that passed through the perforation. The stone is a loose sandstone and relatively light in weight. If not a stone weight, the object could possibly be a spindle whorld.

A complete whetstone or weight with suspension loop. The form of such objects is rather conservative and chronologically unchanging, making them difficult to date precisely. However, the present artefact, with its riveted metal suspension loop, seems likely to fall within the postmedieval period. It is rectangular in profile and section, and is relatively thick (13.5mm). It measures 54.5mm x 21.9mm, with a 23.6mm high suspension loop attached near the top, so that the total length of the object is 58.6mm, though the base is broken. It weighs 41.7mm. The metal loop is connect…

Possible fishing weight, shaped from sedimentary rock. The weight is roughly rectangular shaped at the base and tapers slightly towards the top where there is the remains of what may be a circular suspension loop. The loop has broken away at the top, probably as a result of the stone being fairly soft and porous(it is a type of sandstone). The weight is 106.4g in mass and measures 67.4mm in length, 50.8mm in width and 27.4mm in thickness.

A complete chalk weight, date unknown. This weight is circular in plan and measures 20.9mm in diameter and 10mm in thickness. It has a central circular perforation which measures 6.2mm in diameter. The function of this weight is unknown, it could have been a spindle whorl possibly although it does not have the characteristic biconical shape.

Carved loom or net weight of unknown date (probably Bronze Age – Post Medieval 2150 BC – 1650 AD). The weight is sub circular in plan and sub-rectangular in cross section. It has an off-centre perforated hole (diameter: 9.5mm). The weight has been carved from Oolitic limestone. It measures 54.5mm length, 56.1mm width, is 16.7mm thick, and weighs 62.44 grams. It is very difficult to date this type of artefact as they are common finds from most archaeological periods. This example is relatively light, compared to other sized loom or fish weights. This might hint towards an i…

Half of a chalk spindle whorl, it is circular in plan with an external diameter of 36mm and is 18mm thick. It has a circular perforation through its centre which is 11mm in diameter. This spindle whorl is likely to be medieval in date although it is impossible to date it more closely.
