A distorted cast lead alloy strap loop of probable seventeenth century date, c. AD 1600-1700. In plan, the loop is an elongated oval with rounded ends. One side of the outer surface of the loop is wider than the other side; here the metal widens into an elongated oval panel decorated with four longitudinal grooved lines, with raised ridges in between. On the narrower side of the loop, on the outside, there is a smaller wider section on which there is fixed an elongated oval rust-coloured ferrous plate, which contains the stubs of two rivets. Behind the plate, on the…

Lead alloy probable strap fitting. Rectangular double looped frame with rectangular section elements, with clear mould lines running along all long surfaces; one loop broken, its sides having parted at one corner. The metal retains a grey tint; the material seems inappropriate to either heavy wear or use as a buckle and there is no trace of a pin. An alternative and unrelated identification, perhaps as a toy of similar date, might also be considered. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1960 Length: 28.9mm, Height: 22.6mm, Thickness: 4.8mm, Weight: 6.14gms

A cast lead-alloy mount or strap fitting, probably of post-medieval date. Description: The object is an unequal hexagon in plan with two sides longer than the other four. It is cast in one piece with a distinct casting seam running vertically up the centre of the reverse. Also in the centre of the reverse and close to one end is an integrally-cast rivet or stud, circular in section and now bent to one side, presumably for use in attachment. There are traces of a red dye or paint on the reverse only. The front face is undecorated and smooth. Measurements: Length 20.81mm: Width 13…

A cast lead alloy rectangular sectioned bar with a sub oval profile and rounded terminals. The upper surface of each terminal is pierced by cast holes which are 4.0mm in diameter. There are wear marks presenting as slight grooves on the leading edges of each external hole; it is likely these are caused through wear. There is no decoration present. The surface is a mid grey white colour with a powdery corroded surface. A direct parallel has not been found but a post medieval date is preferred by the recorder. The strap fitting measures 46.2mm length, 13.0 width 10.9mm thickness an…

A cast lead alloy (pewter) strap fitting, probably for furniture or a horse harness and dating to the post-medieval period. The mount is in the form of a flower possibly a stylised 'Tudor' rose, with the inner petals separated by openwork. There is the remains of an attachment on the reverse possibly an integral lug that is now flattened. Although so-called Tudor roses are often attributed to the 16th century, the form remained in use through the 17th and into the 18th century. Although no exact parallel has been found the appearance of the metal, the detail of casting and the subject…

Lead alloy probable strap fitting. Cast loop comprising a lentoid plate with moulded longitudinal ribs and grooves and a round section strap bar of diameter 5.5mm behind it. The finder kindly suggests a function related to a bridle. The material would be too soft to endure heavy wear or tension, and may have had an essentially decorative function. Its size, however, confirms an association with a thick strap, as for horse harness. In both respects, it may be related to a series of lead or lead alloy harness bosses of post-medieval date, for which ease of manufacture and the brightness…

A lead alloy belt clasp or hanger, dating to the early post-medieval period. The fitting is one section of a two part clasp which are thought to be associated with sword belts or belt hangers. This example is roughly rectangular in plan with several crescents and triangular cuttings from the edge of the fitting. There is a central circular aperture while at one end there is an open rectangular element with raised bar and a single loop projecting from one long edge. A direct comparison is illustrated in Read (2008:209 no 755) where these clasp are dated to the 16th century AD.

A lead alloy U-shaped mount or hook fastener, probably forming part of a strap fitting. The mount, which is formed from one piece of metal, consists of a sub-rectangular backplate with nine circular holes arranged along three edges in a U shape. The remaining, bottom edge bends forwards and then up to form a U-shaped hook. The bottom of the U has two raised ribs running from front to back. The top front of the hook is circular, convex and notably smaller than the back plate. The front plate is decorated with what is probably the Imperial Crown. A parallel for this find can be seen at …

An incomplete lead-alloy object, possibly a sword belt fitting or some such object. It is curved at one end, perhaps for attachment, though it is broken before its terminal. The object flares gradually towards the other end, which also seems to be broken. Faint traces of decoration are visible on the interior face, although the object is worn and damaged and these are not clear. It has a green-grey patina and measures 38.48 mm long, 9.23 mm wide, 2.93 mm thick and weighs 3.4 grams. It is possibly post-medieval in date.

A post medieval, cast lead alloy strap loop, probably dating from 1600-1700. In plan, the loop is rectangular with rounded ends. On the long, outer side of the loop the metal widens into an elongated oval panel decorated with four longitudinal grooved lines. On the opposite, inner side, at the point where the loop was attached to the strap, is another, smaller pointed oval, this one on the inside of the loop, undecorated and slightly domed. On the reverse of this smaller oval are the remains of a rectangular ferrous plate. This probably acted as a rove, trapping the leather between th…

Post medieval lead-alloy probable belt mount, cast hollow-backed trefoil with undecorated short convex arms and sub-triangular moulding in centre, the elongated ends of which form dividing ribs. Stump of integral spike in centre of hollow reverse. 21 x 20mm. Cf. a slightly smaller but otherwise very similar piece from Sandringham (NMS-E4735) which was tentatively dated to the 10th century on the grounds of similarity to trefoil brooches.
