Undated fragment of twisted gold wire, 30mm long,(50mm if unbent) and 3mm in diameter. The object is in good condition with a gold patina and weighs 6.16 grams. The object is circular in section and is twisted to form a rope effect. It has been bent over one third along its length, one end has snapped whilst the other end has been chopped. Analysis carried out at the British Museum by Antony Simpson shows that the object is 82-87% gold, 12-14% silver with the remainder being copper.

A folded fragment of sheet gold strip with a narrower strip threaded through and wrapped. Maximum length 13mm; width of wider strip 6mm; thickness 3mm as folded; width of narrow strip 2.5mm; weight 1.43 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content for both of 86-89%, a silver content of 8-10% and at least 1% copper. Though the analysis does not rule out an ancient date, the piece is an undiagnostic fragment which cannot be assigned to a cultural or chronological context. Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it can not be securely date…

Description: A small gold fragment now roughly rectangular in shape. Two of the opposing edges of the fragment are incomplete due to old breaks and the other two are complete but folded backwards to lie flat against the back face. The front face of the fragment is decorated with three central grooves and either side of these, along the folded edges of the fragment; there are lines are incised zigzags
Discussion: No published parallel could be found for this fragment but it is most likely to be more than 300 years old and could conceivably be Roman to medieval in date.

TREASURE CASE 2005 T420 Description A narrow rectangular strip of gold, plain except for a very light ridge running along the centre of one face. Either end has a perforation slightly offset from the centre-line and about 1 mm in diameter. One end has a second, smaller perforation alongside the first. The strip is somewhat buckled all along its length and has also been pinched from side to side at two points close to the ends. Two creases are roughly equi-distant from the ends and are 34 mm apart - exactly half the full length; they suggest that the object was originally wrapped aroun…

A gold ring of uncertain date. The ring has been badly damaged by the plough and as a result has been pulled out of shape. The ring is complete and still roughly circular (maximum diameter 23.09mm) and the gold is very thin (only 1.03mm thick). The maximum width of the hoop is about 4.7mm. There is no decoration on the ring, and it does not look worn; it may have been a decorative binding ring, for example from a walking stick, instead of a finger-ring.

A finger ring examined under the Treasure Act by the British Museum. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate gold content for the ring of 50% and silver content of approximately 47%; it weighs 4.78 grams. The ring has a flat, ovoid bezel drawn out at the shoulders into two narrow, wiry strips tapering to points, which were originally wound together to form the hoop, but are now separated; diameter of bezel, 20 mm (max). The decoration of the bezel appears to have been cast (rather than punched as would be usual on Viking-period rings) and consis…

?BA gold finger-ring. The ring is plain though decorated with a pinched midrib running around its circumference. The midrib is beaten flat in some places, and in others has formed a break. The surface is not smooth although the quality of the metal is very good. Diam 20mm. Thickness less than 0.5mm. Width of band 7-8mm. Weighs 2.08g. The ring was squashed when found, and was taken to a jeweller who is responsible for its present circular shape. The jeweller perfomed the acid test and determined the ring is 24ct.

An incomplete, age uncertain but probably Victorian, gold alloy, sheet construction, broken & damaged possible pendant or brooch. Circular, biconvex, hollow artefact with applied wire and pellets decoration with 19 concentric drop shapes applied around the outer edge. Two twisted wires applied around the outer edge, a fine one close to the front and a coarser one behind. Two small holes on the back that once possibly held a pin for attachment or are simple 'expansion' holes from when the object was made. There is a place at one point around the edge, adjacent to the missing drop shape…

Description: Undiagnostic gold fragment. A piece of thick wire, or rod, of circular section except where chopped at each end. The cutting has given the edges a wedge-like profile.
Dimensions:
Weight: 1.6g
Length: 30.04mm
Diameter: 2.42mm
Discussion: The object has been examined by Ben Roberts, Curator of European Bronze Age at the British Museum, who determined that the fragment is undiagnostic in nature.
Due to the undiagnostic nature of the find it cannot be securely dated to pre-1711 and as such falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996.

An irregular folded and possibly melted fragment of yellow coloured metal, most probably gold, possibly once being a hammered gold coin. The metal is a mid-yellow gold colour. Another interpretation could possibly be metalworking residue. Due to the nature of the find it is undiagnostic and un-datable, but most likely to be medieval or later.
Due to the undiagnostic nature of this find and uncertainty over dating it would not qualify as potential treasure under the 1996 Treasure Act. As such a record of the find has been made here on the PAS database in case of other finds in the …
