Treasure case 2006 T430 Description Fragment of gold strip, embossed with four horizontal lines. In one corner there is a piercing, probably deliberate. The long edges have been folded back such that the folded edge appears on the ‘reverse’ side, from which the embossing has been carried out. Maximum length 30mm; maximum width 17mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.21 grams. Identification In all likelihood the piece is more than 300 years old. However it is not possible to assign this fragment to a firm cultural or chronological context. Consequently, in terms o…

Treasure case 2006 T223 Gold Band Dimensions: 20mm x 15mm x 1mm x 0.7mm Date: Indeterminate date Description: Plain gold band now oval in shape although the band is damaged and distorted. The band is 1mm in width and 0.7mm thick, having a flat underneath and inner perimeter, with a curved face, giving the band a wedge-shaped cross-section. There are no signs of there being a suspension loop or any other broken method of attachment, suggesting that the band is a ferrule or fitting from an object such as a pendant or a knife. The band is of indeterminate date but in the balance of proba…

An amorphous glob of molten gold, now in two pieces that survives as evidence of goldworking of an uncertain date. The gold is very pure, with a slightly pitted surface of a solidified fluid. One end of the glob is larger and heavier with a long neck that has broken with a now separate almost fan-shaped terminal. The high purity, pitted surface and solidified fluid form confirms that this gold has been (re)worked rather than being an example of a naturally occurring nugget of gold ore. As the gold is undiagnostic and cannot be proven to be more than 300 years old, the object do…

Treasure reference number 2017 T1015: a gold band of unknown date. The band is rectangular in section and appears once to have been oval in plan, perhaps forming a ferrule or fitting from an object such as a pendant or a knife. The hoop is no longer a neat oval, but has been bent inwards on either side in the middle. The length of the ferrule is 32mm and the maximum width is 13mm. The hoop measures 3mm in width and 2.2mm in thickness, It is 2.16g in weight. Gold finger ring. Plain cast band comprising a series of six elongated rhomboid panels, each with an angled crease across its centre, the panels being joined by thicker but narrowed strands. As embellishment recurs on each panel it is probably intended. This resembles a simplified version of DEV-D1B964, which is a medieval ring. However, extensive search through the other gold rings which appear on the PAS database fails to confirm parallels of a medieval date. Suggested date: Unknown, possibly Late Medieval to Post-Medieval, 1350-1800. In view of its material and initially suspected …

Gold offcut. A rectangular strip of beaten gold sheet of thickness 0.3mm, with crisp folds along one long edge and at one end, and with a corrugated appearance suggesting seven or eight subsequent folds along its length; now flattened. Though the form is undiagnostic, it is likely this object may represent the working of precious metal in antiquity, probably more than 300 years ago. Suggested date: Unknown, Bronze Age to Early Medieval, 2350BC-AD1100. This would suggest the object should at least be considered under the Treasure process, ref. 2021 T396. Gold ring. A thin possibly lightly hammered ring, perhaps of drawn wire, now distorted and bent. The band is twisted at one point. The current sad form is probably the result of adventitious damage. Thin gold wires might form parts of Roman pendant ear rings, though a much later use as a finger ring or necklace component, or an origin as debris from craftwork is equally possible. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1900 Length (as found): 22.7mm, Width: 11.9mm, Thickness (wire): 0.9mm, Weight: 0.58gms

A gold annular ring with spiral rope motif probably dating to the medieval period, c.AD1200-1500. The annular ring is sub-rectangular in cross-section with a flat reverse. Along the reverse are short longitudinal etches. In the centre of the annular frame is a flat, gold foil with a central circular perforation. The foil is narrow at one end and expands into a sub-ovoid form. Both ends of the gold foil were originally soldered to the frame; only one end remains attached. A gold ring or hoop, damaged. The ring has been pinched so that it has a drop-shaped plan. The ring is circular in section, but with a narrow flattened face internally. The surface of the ring has small nicks and irregularities suggestive of a general lack of finishing after casting and damage sustained during its use prior to deposition. No hallmarks or other identifying features are visible.

Gold foil. A strip of fine beaten gold foil of thickness 0.18mm. The strip was apparently straight-edged and has been neatly folded at least nine times producing a neat and compact flattened roll. This material would appear to be prepared for craft use, as for the decoration by gilding of metalwork, rather than being bullion. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 100-1600. A fragment of sheet gold from an unidentified artefact of unknown date. This fragment has a weight of 2.29g, it is bent and broken though to what extent is uncertain. The sheet metal has a thickness of 0.4mm, maximum incomplete length of 54.4mm and maximum width of c.15.9mm. The strip of metal varies in width along its length and appears to probably have had a partially curved orientation on the single plane. The metal is bent in all directions and this appears to be the result of damage rather than design. Both ends of the strip have irregular terminals indicative of a break rather t…

An incomplete gold disc, possibly a disc brooch or mount. This fragment weighs 3.33g but includes the weight of some adhering mud. No full diameter survives, however the radius measures 17.4mm which would suggest a diameter of 34.8mm if this was indeed a circular artefact. The edge is serrated, each projection having a width of c.1.6mm, some segments seem to be missing and others reduced in length or bent over suggesting partial damage to the edge. At the base of these a strand of wire forms a border on the upper surface. The wire has a width of 0.8mm. It is uncertain due to the adher…
