A complete, but folded, sheet gold basket-shaped ornament of Bronze Age date (2500-2200 BC). The object is composed of a single, oval sheet of gold, rolled into a cylinder. There is an integral, flat, sub-rectangular tang projecting from the centre of one long edge which appears to be truncated. In use, the object would have been a tube, but this example has been further folded. Both ends have been folded towards the middle, and the tube has been flattened, making the ornament now sub-rectangular. There is a crease visible about 2mm from the edge of the sheet all the way round, like a …

A fragment of a Roman sheet gold leaf ornament, dating to c. AD 300-400. The object comprises a single thin sheet of gold cut into the form of a leaf with a midrib and the remains of six pairs of radiating veins. The veins are also incised though on alternating sides with the first pair being on the same side as the rib, the second pair on the opposite side, and so on. The gold sheet has been torn at the base, probably due to an old break. The gold sheet has been folded back on itself from the base on one side of the reverse. Dimensions:  Length: 12.2mm, width: 11.1mm; thick…

A gold fragment of jewellery of suspected Roman-Early Medieval date. The fragment has a leaf-shaped gold plate onto which is soldered twisted wire and pellet decoration in the form of seven teardrops with pellets at the tip; these run in two outward-facing rows up the tapering length of the plate, with a final apical teardrop positioned at the tip and facing the opposite way. The broken end of the object retains part of a framed field which has an incised letter A, most likely the end of an inscription. Around the outside edge of the plate is a soldered border of twisted wire, which ha…

Description: Gold element from jewellery, set with a blue cabochon gemstone. It is an irregular oval or sub-triangle, made to accommodate an uncut gem. It consists of a flat backplate with a central circular scar, and an upright plain collar which curves very slightly inwards to fit over the lower part of the gem, holding it in place. The polished, translucent stone is slightly domed in cross-section, curving to a flat top; it may be a sapphire. The overall cross-section is largely rectangular. Dimensions: Length 9.2mm, width 7.8mm, th…

A Post-Medieval to Modern possible boss from a brooch or other piece of jewellery, possibly dating to circa AD 1850 - 1950. The object is oval in form and consists of a gold fitting with central probable glass convex setting. The glass is a burgundy/purple colour. Surrounding the glass setting is a gold surround with a twisted rope like border, there is a further twisted rope like surround that is narrower at the external edge. The reverse is undercorated and has a concave centre. As the find can not be securely dated to pre-1714 it falls outside the provisions of the Treas…

A complete and unfolded Copper Age basket ornament dated to 2500-2200BC. This item, possibly hair ornaments or ear rings, has been cut from thin gold sheet and would normally have been wrapped into a cylindrical 'basket' shape. This example has been flattened out and shows the full extent of the oval plate which is 38mm long and 16mm wide with semi-circular ends and long straight sides. The interior of the plate is decorated with two concentric lines that run around the outside, inside of this are four zones of about five to six vertical lines running perpendicular to the long edges. …

Gold lunate object, either a pendant or possibly an ear-ring. The object is made of thin sheet metal and rather crudely shaped, although it has suffered a fair degree of post-depositional damage. There is a slight central ridge that runs across the piece. The lower edge is decorated with a series of dog-tooth incisions, rather unevenly spaced. In the centre of the lower side is a circular box setting for a stone or glass gem, now absent; the sides of the setting have been squashed inwards. Inside the setting are the remains of a possible fixing substance. Traces of an attachment loop, …

A slim gold band, flat in cross-section, bent into a U-shape with both ends broken. May have been a ring when complete, or part of some other item of jewellery. Since the broken ends don’t match it is likely that a part is missing. Part of the exterior is decorated with a double row of incised dots, which may have continued around the band but have been worn away since they are very shallow. Likely Early Medieval to Medieval in date. Dimensions: Diameter 24.1x19.7mm, width 4.5mm, thickness 0.9mm, stretched length c.60mm, weight 2.3g Discussion: Since the object is incomple…
