An apparently complete, though slightly squashed, Late Bronze Age (1000-800 BC) gold penannular ring (or 'lock-ring'). It is hollow and triangular in cross-section, formed of two flat (angled) outer faces and an internal slightly concave face. The damage to one of the outer faces reveals a hollow interior and the faces formed of conjoined, narrow, circular-sectioned gold wires. There are sixteen of these wires on each outer face with an additional spinal wire at the outermost join and a wire forming the outer edges of the internal face along the opposite (inner) join. The inter…

A complete gold (or gold plated) penannular ring of mid to late Bronze Age date (c.1300-750 BC.). The body is oval in cross-section. The ring is undecorated, but the outer surface has feint scratches. One face has a small indentation near the left terminal (gap at the bottom) and scratches across the width of the ring. The other face has scratches across the length of the ring (ie the scratches are at a 90 degree angle on the two faces). The terminal surfaces are both flat, but each has a small 'U' shaped mark (the bottom of the U towards the …

A Late Bronze Age (1150-800 BC) gold or gold-plated copper alloy penannular ring, oval in cross-section with cut or burred-over edges at the terminals. The edge opposite the terminal has a cross-section measuring 7.5 x 7.9mm. A paler gold strip or wire (possibly silvery-gold with some evidence of tarnishing, mostly on the inside of the ring) winds around the brighter gold surface of the object to give striped bands of equal size, c. 1mm wide. The object measures 18.5mm in length, 19.8mm in width, 7.9mm in max.thickness (the side opposite to the terminal) and weighs 13.14g.

A Late Bronze Age (1150-800 BC) gold or gold-plated copper alloy penannular ring, oval in cross-section with cut or burred-over edges at the terminals (measuring c.6.3x5.5mm). The edge opposite the terminal has a cross-section measuring 6.6x5.6mm. A paler gold strip or wire (possibly silvery-gold with traces of tarnishing) winds around the brighter gold surface of the object to give striped bands of equal size, c. 1mm wide. The object measures 17.0mm in length, 15.7mm in width, 6.6mm in max.thickness (the side opposite the terminal) and weighs 9.06g.

Description: A Late Bronze Age (c.1500 - 800 BC) gold penannular ring of uncertain function made from an octagonally-sectioned rod bent into a sub-circular shape, the ends overlapping slightly. It is thickest and widest (4.9 x 4.7 mm) at its centre and thinnest at either end (1.5x1.6mm and 1.7x1.7mm). The facets to either side of the object are widest. One of these in particular has a number of transverse grooves, apparently non-decorative. Both ends of the object have slight indentations. This type of ring is not to be confused with the penannular gold rings of more circular cross…

A Late Bronze Age (1150-800 BC) gold or gold-plated copper alloy penannular ring, oval in cross-section with irregularly shaped hollow area at the centre of each terminal. One of the terminals has a chip of metal missing at the edge. The terminals are not perfectly aligned, giving the impression that the object is ever-so-slightly twisted. It is not possible to be entirely certain whether the ring was solid gold or a copper alloy core wrapped in gold sheet (as occurs in several instances). There are no signs of the copper alloy corrosion that can accompany the latter scenario. 'T…

A small crack close to one terminal has a tiny spot of green corrosion attached to it. The object measures 15.6mm in length, 14.9mm in height, 5.5mm in max thickness and weighs 5.60g.The gap between the terminal is 2.6mm wide and the circular open centre measures 6.7x 6.1mm in 'diameter'. A complete gold or possibly gold-plated copper-alloy Late Bronze Age penannular ring, dating to the period 1150-800 BC. The object measures 16.24mm in diameter, is oval in cross-section, and with a gap measuring 2.39mm wide and 3.94mm in height. The thickness of the ring measures 6.59mm. In total, the penannular ring weighs 9.31g. The weight may indicate it is more likely the penannular ring is made of gold, rather than gold plated copper-alloy. There are small indentations on the face of both terminals, probably residual marks from where a stone was wedged between them (with thanks t…

A Late Bronze Age penannular gold ring with hoop of circular cross-section; original decorative banding in broad stripes of yellow and paler gold are very worn and best perceptible near the inner surface. Roughness of gold at one terminal could be due to damage. The surface is heavily worn; scores and scrapes are likely to have occurred post-depositionally. Visual inspection suggests that the piece comprises a gold covering over a base metal core, with some corrosion product at the terminals. A similar penannular ring from Rowlands Castle, Hampshire, was reported through the Treasu…

Small, plain penannular gold ring of flattened oval cross section; the ends taper slightly to flat terminals. Examination in the laboratory indicated that the object has a base metal core. External diameter 15.5x14mm; internal diameter 4.5mm; breadth 6mm; weight 6.18 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of penannular ring from 'Havant area', Hampshire, indicated a gold content of 76 - 79 %, silver content of 16 - 18 %, the remainder being copper. The ring weighs 6.18 grams and the specific gravity measurement of 9 indicates that it has a base metal core.

Small penannular gold ring of sub-circular section with decorative narrow banding in yellow and paler gold; corrosion of the silver-rich stripes has caused blackening in places. The external surfaces are patchily worn. The gap is bridged by green corrosion products probably deriving from a base metal core. External diameter 14mm-15mm; internal diameter circa 7mm; breadth 4.5mm; width of gap circa 2mm; weight 4.13 grams.
